FINGER LAKES COUNCIL BOY SCOUTS "SCOUTING FOR FOOD" FOR HUNGRY NEIGHBORS

On Saturday, November 12, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers will continue a Finger Lakes Council good turn that began in 1988. But "Do a good turn daily" is the Boy Scout slogan.
Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers will visit more than 100,000 homes in Ontario, Wayne, Seneca and Yates counties to ask for food donations. The food is then turned over to more than 50 local food pantries and community kitchens to help meet their needs during the holiday season.
Scouts will begin collecting food at 9:00 a.m. Residents can either put canned goods and other non-perishable foods into a plastic grocery bag and put it on their front steps or wait for a Scout to knock on their door.
Scouts hope to collect 60-70 tons of food, as they have each year since the Scouting For Food good turn began. By mid afternoon on Saturday, the food will have been packed in cartons and delivered to the food distribution agencies. All of the food stays right in the four-county area; most of it stays right in the community in which it is collected. Food panties and community kitchens in the four-county area have come to depend on the annual Scouting for Food good turn to help them fulfill the increased requests for food during he holiday period.
Perishable or home canned foods cannot be accepted and glass containers should be avoided. The food will be picked up by boys as young as seven years old.
