Last Tuesday, October 25, the boys' jv and varsity volleyball teams celebrated Senior night when they hosted SOTA in a non-league match.
In the first game of the jv match Midlakes fell behind, 15-12, tied the game, then the lead and serve swung back and forth until Midlakes found themselves up, 22-18, and won, 25-19.
Tony Mineo gave us a 4 point lead to start the 2nd game, which we frittered away so we were behind for most of the game. We were down 20-17 when Jake Kyler took the ball and served us to a tie before we turned it over. We got it back on the next serve, however, and Zach Brooks took us from the tie at 21 to a 25-21 win.
Ryan Teed served up a 3-0 lead to start the 3rd game, and we promptly gave it away. This time we managed to keep a bit ahead until SOTA tied us at 17 and went on to lead by 3. David Crouch used his serve to tie us at 20, but we gave up the serve at 21 and lost that game, 25-21.
The intermission time was used for recognitions. Five peewee volleyball players received T-shirts. Cathy Pappert and Katrina Galbreath, scorekeepers, were recognized for their steadfast loyalty, and Mrs. Witter was named the fan par excellence for following the team EVERYWHERE.
Coach Salisbury also recognized his four seniors and their parents, acknowledging their contributions to the program and how they will be missed. Ryan McConnon has spent 2 years on the varsity team, 4 years in the program. Alex Gilmore, a 2 year varsity player, has given 5 years to the program. Chris Kauder also has been a varsity player for 2 years, has played for 3 years in all. Mark DeCook, another 2 year varsity player with only 3 years total, has had the biggest impact on the program, having totaled 217 kills and 53 blocks so far this year. These guys have "been there before", so we look to them for the leadership needed to keep their teammates focused as Midlakes begins sectional play this Wednesday, November 2, with a home match at 6pm against the winner of the Sodus/Pembroke game
In the 1st game of the varsity match, neither team was "in sync," and the score inched along with each team making service errors and following them up with great plays. SOTA had an excellent net player who blocked and spiked, but many of their players had also played on the jv team, so to say they were undermanned would be an understatement. When the score was 17-16, Mark DeCook took the serve and finished the game for a 25-17 Midlakes win.
Pete Fellenz staked us to a 7-0 lead to start the 2nd game, with a lot of saves "from his friends." We maintained and kept adding to the lead; EJ Wells Spicer served the last point for the 25-12 win.
The 3rd game got off to a slow start; neither team seemed focused so the early points were from net serves and lucky placement until EJ took the serve with a 5-5 tie and gave us a 9-6 lead. Ryan McConnon served the final 2 points for a 25-9 win and the sweep. In this game the real difference was the net play of Josh DeBoover.
On Thursday, October 27, the varsity girls began their sectional play by hosting their counterparts from SOTA. We had earned the "home field advantage" with a 7th seed in Class B over 10th for SOTA. Senior Missy Wells Spicer sat out the game with an injury. Stevie Hilfiker, Amanda DeRuyter, and Emily Wright were up from the jv team for the sectional run.
Neither team got into a groove early so the points inched upward very much in lockstep until Emily Wright served 6 points in a row, including 1 ace, to give us a 15-8 cushion. Brenna Cavanaugh added 3 more, to give us a 21-10 margin before turning it over; Becky Rouland served our last 3 points for a 25-10 win.
In the second game we quickly had a 15-5 lead and maintained that for a 25-14 win. SOTA took a 4-1 lead in the 3rd game as we made several mental errors. We tied the game at 6, and then Amanda DeRuyter served 3 aces (she had 4 on the night) to give us a 9-7 lead when she gave it up. We quickly got the serve back and went on to a 25-15 win and the sweep. This win meant we were to travel to Newark (2nd seed) last Saturday for a 3 o'clock game.
Both our varsity soccer teams were involved in sectional play last weekend, and both were on the road. In Class BB the girls were 5th and headed to #4 Penn Yan on Friday afternoon. The boys, also a #5 seed, went to #4 Attica on Saturday for a 2pm game. Tom Cheney, Mike Green, and Sean Sweeney were pulled up from the jv team for that contest.
It was not a very nice week for outdoor sports, and between the cold rains and other responsibilities I did not see the two home games of the modified girls' B team nor the modified boys' game.
Coach Shymkiw's team had kind of a "close but no cigar" week. After Monday's 2-1 loss (Pal-Mac scored their second goal very near the end of the game) he said he felt like Charlie Brown after Lucy had once again pulled the football out of the way. Breanna Reed scored for us.
The team also played well against usually dominant Canandaigua, holding them to 1 goal in the first half on Wednesday. They gave up the second goal about 5 minutes into the 3rd quarter and 3 more in a 5 minute span. The final score was 6-0.
The modified boys were playing on Thursday afternoon while I was inside watching the volleyball sectional game. They won also, but that is the extent of the information I have gotten from Coach Cheney so far.
