Midlakes Sports

The high school soccer teams summed up their seasons with a banquet and awards on November 13 at Club 86 in Geneva. Coach Scalise had four awards for the varsity boys. Ben Bengston was the Most Improved. Brett Adams was the Top Defensive Player. The Coach's Award went to Riley O'Neil and Aaron Dorman was named the season MVP.
Coach Stewart recognized six specific players in his awards talk. Mike Green and Mike Groff received the Captain's Awards. Joe Avanzato was the Most Improved player, and Tom Cheney received the Coach's Award. Conor Hogan was named the Offensive Player of the Year, and Sean Sweeney was the Play Maker of the Year.
I'm sorry to say I did not attend the dinner, and I have not heard from the girls' coaches so I do not know what awards were handed out to them.
The 7tth and 8th grade boys' basketball teams began their seasons last week at home with games against Canandaigua on Wednesday and Wayne on Friday. The cheerleaders made their first appearance then also. Coach Russo is being assisted by Sue Pieters because the cheerleaders are cheering at both games, one in each gym.
The modified cheerleading squad consists of the following girls: Megan Hackett, Johanna Hardy, Tiffany Ikonomou, KC Klopfel, Miranda LaVare, Tiffany Murray, Ashley Price, Dara Salerno, Micha Smith, Cassondra Stetzel, Raevin Wheeler, Tara Beckens, Jessica Coulombe, Samantha Dennis, Megan Deppen, Alysha Evancho, and Megan McVeigh. The groups looked very polished, and they only had two weeks to practice. The groups will be fluid so that different combinations will be cheering for each team during the season.
The 8th grade boys are coached by Pete Czerkas. He has released the following roster: Matt Barilla, Zach Bassett, Dominic Beniamino, Sebastian Brundage, Aaron Burnett, Matt DeHond, Jordan Filiatreau, John Hicks, Nick Judge, Ben Landschoot, Joe Lord, Teddy Oaks, and DJ Thompson. The manager is Cody Schmitt.
This team had a rough time on Wednesday against a taller, stronger Canandaigua team. John Hicks started the scoring with a long 2, but Canandaigua answered. Neither team could get comfortable with an offensive rhythm early because each team's defense was pesky and persistent. Eventually, however, Canandaigua's height advantage and hand strength allowed them to take the lead. Our outside game wasn't working very well so an 8-4 lead after one quarter became a 16-8 halftime lead for the Braves, and it didn't get any better.
Friday was a much different story. Wayne was playing man-to-man and was also a better height match up. Even with some early passing problems we had a 6-4 lead after one period. Wayne took the lead with 5:30 left in the half, but Teddy Oaks gave it back to us by making both ends of a 1-1 free throw opportunity. Nonetheless, Wayne held a 16-13 advantage at the half. They couldn't maintain it, however, and Midlakes pulled out a win to split the week, 1-1 to start the season.
The 7th grade is playing a 5 quarters format, with all 5 counting toward a final score. On Wednesday, after two periods, Midlakes held a 12-9 lead that Canandaigua cut to 18-16 in the next 3:30. That was as close as they would get. We took a 26-19 lead after four periods and pushed it to a 44-23 final.
On Friday we had a 16-7 lead over Wayne when I arrived. We built it to a double digit lead before our shooting went south. Fortunately Wayne was not shooting well either, and they did not take advantage; we still led, 20-12, after 3 periods. In the fourth our shooting woes continued, and Wayne chipped away, cutting our lead to 23-18. We came out firing on all cylinders again in the fifth period, and won, 38-26. This team stands at 2-0 at the end of the first week of the season. These teams are away this week.
The varsity and jv girls will open their season with the annual Tip Off Tournament on Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. The games begin at 1pm on Friday, Nov. 25 with a jv match-up of Wayland-Cohocton and Lyons, followed at approximately 2:30 by Naples vs. Midlakes. The varsity games begin that evening at 6pm with WayCo/Lyons, followed at about 7:30 by Naples/Midlakes. On Saturday the games are scheduled for the same times, but the first game is the consolation game, pitting Friday's losing teams, and the second game is the championship game.
Coach Wilbur feels he has a contender this year. The team enjoyed a great deal of success in the summer league, and he has several starters returning. This year's roster follows: captains Whitney Dixon and Liz Donk, Hollie Rinaldo, Alex Oaks, Katie Litts, Jane Petzoldt, Meredith Burns, Aerica Maslyn and exchange student Natalie Balazs. Again this year Amy Kierst and Nate Rich are volunteering their time to help, and Sydney Forshay and Dominique Burri are the managers. I do not yet have the jv roster.
The jv and varsity boys' teams will be in Livonia for that tournament this weekend. We have had a fair amount of success there in the past and are looking forward to that happening again.
Coach Panek has released the varsity roster: captains Caleb Frederick and Zach Maslyn lead a strong group of returnees and a smaller group up from last year's jvs. Randy Kuhlman, Ryan Forshay, Jordan Wilson, Torey Pieters, Jesse DeBoover, Ben Sheppard, Clay Hemminger, Greg VanderBrook, Jamieson Reed, and Neil Scheible round out the list.
Coach Young is again handling the jv reins and has released the following roster: sophomores Colin Ahearn, Trey Baker, Josh DeBoover, Zach Hicks, Jared Schoonerman, Tim Shove, Kyle Taplin, Kyle Tillman and John Wilkins are joined by 9th graders Jake Clyde and Erin Kelly and 8th grader Sean Sweeney.
We again have a big contingent of varsity cheerleaders under the direction of Coach Hovey. Three captains: Krisha Burnett-Farrands, Amanda Archer and Rachel Walters, will lead the group consisting of Katie Kincade, Kara Morrell, Natasha Sherman, Angela Price, Kristina Pearson, Ashley Hall, Samantha Price, Suzanne Mullard, Renee Parsons, Kailene Klix, Adriane Dorman, Heather Galens, Lizzy Scoville, Sarah Landschoot, and Tiffany Johnston.
Almost as many cheerleaders are on the jv roster. Coach Young has released this roster: Ali Hemminger, Katie Abraham, Annie Bulley, Michele Robbins, Kaja Parker, Ashley Vehec, Alaina Frazer, Brittany Benge, Rachael Stell, Jaimie Price, Hannah Smith, Jen Myers, Brogan Hinckley, Heather Walker and Amanda Shaffer.
The varsity cheerleaders held a bake sale during the 7th and 8th grade games last Friday. It was a nice treat. Everything looked good, but I can personally vouch only for the brownies and the peanut butter fudge.
