AREA RESIDENT ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF NEW YORK AMERICAN AUXILIARY


      Mary Williams of Weedsport, NY was one of nearly 2,000 delegates, alternates and distinguished guests from across the country who attended the Department of New York Annual American Legion Auxiliary Convention July 7-9 at the Best Western Hotel in Binghamton. Mary is eligible for membership in the Auxiliary through her husband Robert who retired from the Navy as a CPO.
      Mary participated in a variety of activities throughout the week, including Department Executive Convention meetings, divisional caucuses, the nomination of officers and recognition of the achievements from 2004-05.
      Mary will serve under newly-elected national President Carol VanKirk of Sutton, Nebraska.
      Williams' theme this year was "Ensuring Our Future Through Education. Her special project is Empire Girls State.
      The American Legion Auxiliary believes that training our youth about the basic ideals and principles of our system of government will help to ensure the survival of our republic. Through a unique citizenship training program, Auxiliary members teach the youth of our nation to understand, comprehend, and appreciate their roles as United States citizens. This program is called Girls State. The Girls Sate program has grown from a few hundred participants to nearly 25,000 Girls State delegates annually. The Auxiliary has been recognized many times by Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and the National Association f Secondary School Principles (NASSP) for outstanding Girls State and Girls Nation Programs.
      Mary, and her three Vice Presidents, embarked on an 11-day, 10-district Conference tour across New York State. September 16, 2005, they visited the Seventh District Conference which was held at the Holiday Inn in Waterloo, NY. They spoke to over 150 members and guests. Their message about the following committee programs for the year will be Membership, Children & Youth, VA&R & Field Service.
      Youth Hero Award - On October 19, 2005, David Allman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Greg Allman was presented the Youth Hero Award by the American Legion Auxiliary. David is a Boy Scout with Troop 125 in Williamson of Wayne County. He is one of only 33 recipients in the nation to receive this prestigious award. Ontario County American Legion Auxiliary President Tina Ketchum, read an article in the paper about how David saved his little sister's life. Awed by his heroism, she submitted an application to the Dept. of New York American Legion Auxiliary, which was forwarded to the National Organization. At the National Convention in Hawaii, David was chosen out of 87 applicants to receive the award. At the October American Legion Auxiliary monthly meeting for Ontario County, Past District president, Georean Davis presented David with his "Youth Hero" Certificate. State Vice-Detachment Commander, Jerry Ketchum presented David with his 2006 membership into the Son's of the American Legion (S.A.L.). On behalf of the Aux. Dept. President Mary J. Williams, 7th District president Eileen D. Peterson presented David with a flag pin and President Williams' pin.
