The 2005 Tip Off Tournament, this year sponsored by the American Legion, Phelps Post 457, and the Midlakes Hardwood Club, got underway last Friday at 1pm with the jv contests. Wayland-Cohocton defeated Lyons in a very low-scoring game. Lyons put in a 3 to get to within 5 points with a bit more than 1 minute left on the score clock and picked up another with 15 seconds left that cut the lead to 4, but WayCo hit both ends of two 1-1 opportunities to pull out a 29-23 win.
Coach Amanda Johnson released her jv roster last week. It includes sophomores Shannon Sweeney, Michele Iannone and Stacey DeCook. The rest are freshmen: Marki Michaels, Kaila Fox, Krista Baroody, Kristin McGregor, Samantha Hemminger, Gina Phamisith, Kyla Durso, Alissa Galliher, Kaylie Ford, and Claire Scheible. Shannon, Michele and Marki are the tri-captains.
Our jvs played the jv team from Naples; both teams were showing typical first game breakdowns - turnovers galore, careless fouls, and low % shooting. Midlakes had the height advantage, a rare occurrence for us, and we made it work. Shannon started the scoring, and we were never really threatened. Up 9-2 after one period, we had pushed that to a 27-7 lead by the half and won, 50-18, setting up a WayCo-Midlakes championship game for Saturday afternoon. Shannon had 17, Krista 9, and Kristin 5 to lead the scoring.
The varsity contests began at 6pm with the WayCo - Lyons meeting. WayCo was down by double digits early in the 3rd but didn't surrender. They kept pestering but never got closer than 8. Lyons erupted in the waning minutes of the period to push their lead to 18 (38-20). Thanks to some 3s WayCo did narrow the gap somewhat, but Lyons won fairly handily, 49-34. Lyons is coached by Eric Kuhn, a Midlakes graduate who used to coach basketball at Midlakes.
Naples is coached by Gary Husk, who also used to coach at Midlakes in the basketball program and has coached varsity softball for the past two seasons.
Whitney Dixon started the scoring of the Midlakes/Naples game with a 3; Holly followed with a 2, suddenly it was 8-0, and Naples called time out. It didn't help, and the 1st quarter ended with an 18-0 score showing. Naples had their chances - the ball just wouldn't drop in for them. In fact nearly 10 minutes of playing time would go by before they finally scored. Then they scored 6 points in the next minute and kept chipping away, cutting our lead to 9 as every eagle had gone suddenly cold. We recovered slightly and led by 31-17 at the half.
Neither team shot well to start the 2nd half, and both defenses were very aggressive. Alex Oaks finally got it going and scored 12 of our 14 points in the 3rd quarter, Jane Petzoldt got the other basket there. We were cold (6 points) in the 4th, but so were they (5 points). At the end the scoreboard read 51-27, Midlakes, setting up a meeting with Lyons for the championship Saturday night. Alex led all scorers with 19; Whitney had 17, Aerica Maslyn 6, and Liz Donk 5.
