FINGER LAKES RADIATION ONCOLOGY IS DECEMBER 2005 CHAMBER BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

Finger Lakes Radiation Oncology (FLRO) is the December 2005 Chamber Businesses of the Month. FLRO is a leading provider of radiation therapy treatments in the central Finger Lakes region located on the campus of Clifton Springs Hospital, Clifton Springs New York. Their telephone number is (315) 462-5711.
Radiation treatment is one of the most important ways of treating cancer. High energy x-ray machines called linear accelerators are used to deliver high does of radiation very precisely. Radiation is an effective alternative to surgery for many patients with cancer, and in other cases is used together with surgery or chemotherapy to improve the possibility of cure. Even in patients with advanced disease radiation can be used to relieve a patient's symptoms and improve their quality of life.
Finger Lakes Radiation Oncology was founded in 1985 by Dr. Sidney Sobel. Physicians in the area contacted him because many patients in the Finger Lakes area were unable to travel to Rochester for their cancer care, including radiation treatments, which resulted in needles suffering and avoidable deaths.
Once a feasibility study had been completed, facility planning could begin. Clifton Springs was selected because of the enthusiastic support of Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic and of Mr. Drew Morris of G.W. Lisk Company, Inc.
From the outset, FLRO was an independent practice, not a satellite facility. Although until 1994 the facility was staffed by physicians who also worked at Genesee Hospital in Rochester, the clinical staff has always been separate and all treatment and treatment planning have been done here. This allowed us to introduce many sophisticated high precision techniques to the area. Our dedicated CT Scanner is connected directly to computers, which allow us to plan the patient's treatment in 3 dimensions. Precision planning and treatment techniques make it possible to deliver higher doses of radiation to the cancer while decreasing the risk of complications. We were the first facility in this area to use Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), which allows us to focus the radiation on the tumor and spare normal organs better than ever before. We were also the first center in the area to use daily ultrasound measurements to improve precision in treating patients with prostate cancer. Dr. Albrecht has performed seed implantations for prostate cancer since 1997.
Dr. Charles Albrecht joined the practice in 1988 and has worked full-time at Clifton Springs since 1991. He became Medical Director of the facility in 1995 and purchased the practice from Dr. Sobel in 2005. Dr. Albrecht was Board Certified in 1984. Dr. Dana Hanson came to FLRO in 2001 after practicing in Minnesota and Arkansas. He served as a medical officer in the U.S. Army for over 10 years. Dr. Hansen was Board Certified in 1988.
Over the years, FLRO has gained a reputation, not only for technical expertise, but also for patient oriented care. We have a wonderful, experienced staff that work together as a team to make a difficult experience as easy as possible. Procedures are carefully explained at every step of the way. Questions about cancer are answered in words the patient can understand. Helping hands, listening ears, and warm hearts are always available.
We treat cancer. We care for people.
