Midlakes Sports

by Ginny Konz

The championship games of the girls' Tip Off Tournament come on Saturday, too late for last week's paper. The jv consolation game pitted Lyons against Naples in a low scoring game, fairly easily won by Lyons, 26-13.
Midlakes faced Wayland-Cohocton in the championship game. Both offenses were forced to work hard because both defenses were very stingy. Unfortunately our defense had more holes in it, and the shots we got against their defense were not dropping with much regularity. Early on we were also losing the rebounding battle and making bad passes, but patience and some corrections during time-outs brought us to within one with 20 second left in the first period.
Midlakes took the lead briefly on Krista Baroody's inside shot, but they quickly tied and then gave themselves a little cushion at the foul line. Meanwhile our poor passing continued, and after 50% free throw shooting in the first quarter, we didn't collect on any of our opportunities until the fourth period, when we again managed 50%.
Down 19-13 at the half, we were frustrated and some began taking shots from way outside, which were missed, and the rebounds went to Way-Co. Two Midlakes points in the entire 3rd period put us further behind (26-15). Their shots began dropping smoothly, the way they do for confident shooters, and ours never did. Way-Co outscored us in each quarter and won, 36-24, to take home the first place trophy, donated by the Phelps American Legion.
The varsity championship was between Lyons and Midlakes. As good as we played that night, Lyons was better, even better than they had been the evening before. Midlakes had an early 14-6 lead that disappeared pretty quickly when Lyons switched to a man-to-man defense The game was very close the entire way, generally a two-point game until the last minute and a half. We missed a shot, they rebounded and made their shot; we missed the shot and lost the rebound on our next possession. Then we were forced to foul, and they weren't missing those free throw opportunities. The final score was not indicative of the game. Whitney Dixon and Alex Oaks, each with 29 points for the weekend, were selected to the All-Tournament team.
Last Tuesday there were several games on campus, and though I planned to see at least two of them, I didn't see any. Hence, what follows comes from the coaches.
The freshmen made their home debut and wished they hadn't. According to Coach Stewart, "they pressed us all game, and we got nervous and turned the bal over way too many times. Kyle Consoli was the leading score with 11, but Midlakes lost, 68-29, to Geneva.
The jv home opener went much better; in fact it was in some ways a mirror image of the freshmen game that preceded it. We were leading by 40 after 3 periods, and Coach Young cleared the bench for the fourth quarter en route to a 60-29 win over Lyons. The scoring was very balanced. Zack Hicks stood out with 3 3's helping to make up his 17 points. Coach Young was pleased with the good ball movement, and happy that for the 3rd straight time we had held opponents under 40 points.
The name of Marya Withey was inadvertently left off the list of modified cheerleaders printed a few weeks ago. The 7th and 8th grade boys' teams played at home last Tuesday as well, but I have very little information. Coach Czerkas did not supply any information (never a good sign), and Coach Meyer said, "we beat Newark (before Thanksgiving), lost to Victor (last Tuesday)."
This week, on Thursday the modified boys' swimming team will hold their second home meet, with Geneva. I have not yet received a roster for this team.
On Friday, December 9, the 7th, 8th, jv and varsity boys will all host their counterparts from Marcus Whitman, starting at 4:15 with the modified team games.
