The boys' swim team hosted the team from HAC last Monday. Apparently it is not unusual that the HAC team was about half girls; some schools do not have the numbers for two teams and compete in the boys' season. This was a very solid team of strong swimmers, and they beat us, 98-58.
The 200 medley relay was a close race early, but we gradually were overpowered. We entered 1 team, they had 3. Our swimmers were Andre Pelletreau, Joe DeRaddo, Gage Pendergast, and Glenn Schultes. In the 200 freestyle, the swimmer from HAC lapped the field but Mark Logan was 2nd, Andre Pelletreau was 3rd, and Chris Roll 4th.
Gage Pendergast led the entire way in the 100 individual medley, and Joe DeRaddo was 3rd. One of the HAC swimmers "blew every one else out of the water" in the 50 freestyle; our entries were Mike Avanzato, Glenn Schultes, and Nick DeSain. Gage finished 2nd in the 50 butterfly. The 100 freestyle was really a race for 2nd, and Chris Roll was nosed out by less than a second to finish 3rd. Third was our highest finish in the 50 breaststroke also, Mark Logan finished in just over a minute.
We entered 2 teams in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Chris Roll, Matt Chilson, Mike Avanzato and Mark Logan was 2nd early but gradually slowed and finished 3rd. Again our opponents had no divers and Matt Chilson pulled out a win over teammate Jason Celestino.
On Tuesday the boys' basketball teams hosted their counterparts from Waterloo. The 8th graders lost a close one, 32-30.
In the jv game, Waterloo scored first and that's the only time they led. Actually, neither offense got into a rhythm early because both defenses were disruptive. We did get the shots to drop, finally, and led, 15-5 at the end of the first quarter. A series of steals to start the second period gave us a 9-0 scoring bump in the first 2 minutes of the second period. Then we began to telegraph our passes and let Waterloo grab the momentum briefly. The halftime score was 32-16, and it was really all over. We continued to add to our lead, and won going away, 66-30. One unusual event: Josh DeBoover drew an intentional foul. He made the two free throws, which helped him reach his 22 point total. Jake Clyde added 14.
The varsity game was a battle from the opening tip. Waterloo led, 12-10 after one period. Midlakes grabbed a one point lead early in the second period, and we traded the lead until about the middle of the period when Waterloo exploded while our shooting and rebounding both "went south." They outscored us 22-11 in the quarter for a 34-21 lead.
One of those exquisitely timed alley-oop shots from Ben Sheppard to Caleb Frederick ignited the Midlakes faithful to start the second half. Two 3s from Jordan Wilson helped us outscore them 16-8 in this period, closing the gap to 42-37. Holding Waterloo scoreless to start the 4th, we went ahead 43-42 after 2:30 but not for long. Both teams played with determination, and we tied the score at 49 with 1:17 to go. It was still tied with 4.8 seconds to go, and we had the ball, but the buzzer sounded before Torey Pieters could off a shot that dropped.
Overtime was a defensive clinic. There was little scoring. Caleb hit two free throws to tie the score at 51, they took a two point lead, Jordan's attempt at a 3 to win was blocked, they grabbed the ball, we fouled, they made one of two free throws, and our three-pointer at the other end missed. The final score was 54-51.
Friday's games were postponed because school had been cancelled due to the weather. The wrestling team will hold their first home meet Tuesday, Dec. 20, beginning at 6:30. You can see the freshmen basketball team at 4:30 that day. Wednesday the girls' basketball teams will play, beginning at 6pm, and Thursday the 7th and 8th grade team will play at 4:15. The boys' Christmas tournament is scheduled for Dec. 28 and 29 with some new opponents this year.
