The jv and varsity boys' basketball teams traveled to Penn Yan on Saturday, December 17, to make up Friday's game, postponed since school was canceled. As you no doubt read in the FLT, the varsity team won. Coach Young provided this summary of the jv game: "Midlakes jv boys took a one point lead into halftime but poured in 38 second half points to beat Penn Yan, 60-39. Zack Hicks poured in 21 points, including 3 for 4 from beyond the three point arc, and Trey Baker had 16 points off the bench. The jv squad improved to 6-0 on the season, 3-0 in the league."
Those two teams traveled to Mynderse last Tuesday, and Coach Young reported thus: "We lost, 55-42. Josh DeBoover had 17 points while Kyle Tillman chipped in with 8, including two 3 pointers. We were trailing the entire second half and had cut it to 5 with 2 minutes left; but we had a 3 go in and out, and then Mynderse scored on their next possession," breaking our momentum.
On campus last Tuesday, the freshmen were also playing Mynderse. Kyle Consolie scored the first points of the game on a fast break after a steal. That began what would prove to be a very close game with the lead see-sawing. Both teams suffered at times from the "in and out flu," especially at the beginning of the 2nd period when neither team scored in the first 3 minutes. We were leading, 11-7, after the first quarter but Mynderse regained the lead on free throws and kept it with an improved defense and continued success at the foul line. We chipped away in the third at the Mynderse 22-17 halftime lead, and had cut it to 35-33 when the period ended. We tied the game at 35 and again at 43, but our shots did not drop late, and they continued to shoot well from the free throw line. Justin Huntsman was our leading scorer with 11, followed by Kyle Consolie with 10, and Ben Uvegas with 9.
The wrestlers had their home opener later that evening, a non-league meet with Honeoye Falls-Lima. Tyler Brooks-Lambert pinned his 103lb. opponent in the 2nd period. Steve Rathbone pinned his 112 lb. opponent just before time ran out in the first period. Jacob DeVoll lost at 119 lbs., but we came back with another win, Chris Stobie pinned his 125 lb. opponent in the 2nd period. Dan Jones and Ryan Teed lost at 130 and 135 lbs. respectively
Morgan Hoven pinned his opponent 49 seconds into the 140 lb. match. Tristan Ester received a forfeit at 145 lbs. Eric Minns lost at 152 lbs. as did Josh Morocco at 171 lbs. Jesse Goodman pinned his 160 lbs. opponent, Bryant Rice pinned his 215 lbs. opponent in 55 seconds, and Trent Jones won, 9-4, at 189 lbs. The final score was 45-21, Midlakes.
In exhibition matches Kaleb DeVoll pinned one opponent but had to take another to overtime before winning, 7-5, at 112lbs. Travis Bevins (152lbs.), Aaron Congdon (189 lbs.), and Tyler Brooks-Lambert (120lbs.) pinned their opponents. Steve Kemp (152lbs.) and Tristan Ester (140lbs.) were both pinned. Steve had been leading, 7-0, before running out of gas and being pinned as the 2nd period ran out.
The next night, December 21, the girls' basketball teams hosted Mynderse. Michele Iannone was sidelined with some ligament damage in her leg but hopes to be able to play this week. Two "illegal screen," one "five seconds" calls did not help our first period and yet the score was tied at 6 after one period. Besides the execution problems we weren't shooting well either - 6 points from one field goal and 4/8 from the charity stripe. The second period was not much better - 9 points to their 11. We did better in the third (13 points) and were ahead, 28-26, thanks to a jump shot by Shannon
Sweeney. We could not sustain the shooting success, however, and lost, 41-35. Shannon had a total of 9 points; Krista Baroody was high with 11 points and our most consistent player, scoring in all our quarters.
Our varsity team got off to a slow start, too, but held a 15-10 point lead after one period, thanks to a late flurry. The second period featured heavy defense by both teams, and the only scoring for 4:30 came from free throws. Nonetheless we fared better than they did, pulling ahead further (30-21 at the half). Our shots did not drop well in the 3rd period, and they made good use of free throw opportunities to make up some ground. A bit of comic relief came when a ball got stuck on the top of the back board, and the ball that was tossed up to knock it down also got stuck. The higher ball was finally knocked down, but Randy Kuhlman came out of the stands to jump up and hit the lower one, knocking it loose so the game could continue to a 48-40 victory for us. Liz Donk was high scorer.
The 7th and 8th graders played Pal-Mac teams in the final home contests before the Christmas break, on Thursday, December 22. The 8th grade game was tied at 6 and then Pal-Mac's incredible height and better skill took over. Pal-Mac had a roster full of boys whose size and skill would have been an asset to a lot of jv teams. They were ahead 21-6 after one period, slowed down somewhat in the second but maintained a comfortable, 29-12, lead, and won, 52-23.
The 7th graders were down 22-10 at halftime but kept chipping away. They came within 8 late, but were behind, 33-24, after the third period. We cut their lead to 2 with 5 minutes left and tied it at 37 with 2:41 left on a steal and fast break by John Storer. Less than 30 seconds later we had a lead, thanks to a rebound and fast break by Cory Gray, and went on to win, 45-41.
Some announcements are in order. Whitney Dixon was named the Birds' Eye Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 5. Four of the fall sports teams were named scholar-athlete teams: the girls' volleyball team with a 94.23 average, girls' soccer with a 92.47 average, boys' soccer with a 92.41 average, and football with a 90.87 average. Congratulations to the athletes and the teams and the school.
This week the annual Christmas Tournament begins on Wednesday, Dec. 28, with a game between the jv teams from South Seneca and Portville at 1pm, followed at about 2:30 by a jv game between Midlakes and Freddy Thomas. The same matchups will be used for the varsity games in the evening, beginning at 6pm. The finals will be held on Thursday, December 29. The consolation games will be played at the early times (1 and 6) with the championship games following.
