PHIL LOSSIFER
|
Years go by, Christmas comes an' goes. Sometimes it's hard t' git inta the spirit as one sees the effect of money on the season. However, there's things people must not lose sight of durin' this season:
There are famblies affected by hurricanes who won't have a Christmas this year unless charitable organizations help them. If one sees Salvation Army kettles in yer travels, be generous. There, but for the grace of God could go many of us. There's many who've helped durin' disasters this year. Perhaps most unsung aide workers was our maligned military. Watchin' Coast Guard rescuers pull people from flood-covered areas was soberin'. Not one copter was lost durin' Katrina rescue efforts. Think of their devotion t' our own people.
The Tsunami showed how efficient our military could be. Providin' food from carriers stationed offshore, hospital ship treatin' people's injuries. These warn't high falutin' people pattin' themselves on the back. It was American soldiers helpin' those, in some cases enemies, from disaster.
Pakistan earthquakes have produced devastation almost beyond tsunami relief efforts. Did our military worry 'bout Taliban shootin' down planes over devastated areas? No, they went in, tryin' t' help people. One story was of a EMT team travelin' mountainous areas givin' people medical attention. By themselves, traveled there at their own expense.
You may mention the Iraq conflict, war whatever. Here a'gin', American troops bein' shot at whilst givin' candy t' Iraqi children. Those of us who've been in the military always had a soft spot fer kids, some of whom didn't have food nor shelter.
When y' go t' church, Christmas bein' one of the better attendance days I'm tol', mebbe yer oughter thank our military young people. These are young men an' women, who've volunteered, from outlyin' areas of our country, doin' work above an' beyond what Media chooses t' tell. How'd I know? Like many, been there, done that.
Above disasters have had their effect on survivors. But, if y' look close, yer'll find common people helpin' each other. Govmint came in after, braggin' how they'd help. Funny, sometimes I think it's better if govmint stays outta the way. Sure avoids all the hot air.
It's what makes our country great is all the people we've helped. No matter what's bein' said throughout the world, common Americans on a day-in day-out situation, make Christmas for the world with their generosity. Have a Merry Christmas.
