Midlakes Sports

Even though the Midlakes pool has been off-limits recently and our swimming teams have finished their seasons, two Midlakes students are still swimming competitively. RC Weston and Greg Marks are swimming with the Geneva varsity team. RC has been doing this for two years; this is Greg's first year, but they couldn't wait for us to have a varsity team. They both have very competitive times. This month alone RC has finished 2nd and then 1st in the 200 individual medley and Greg finished 1st in the breaststroke.
The wrestling team had their big tournament on Saturday, January 7 with teams from Pal-Mac, South Seneca, Brighton, Cicero-North Syracuse, Penfield, Marion, Batavia, Sodus, and Adirondack in attendance. This was a duals tournament, meaning teams wrestled like it was a regular meet, but there were 5 or 6 meets in one day.
Though as a team Midlakes finished 7th, two wrestlers soared through the day. Heavyweight Chris Teed and Morgan Hoven, who has been wrestling at 135 lbs., both went undefeated. Morgan, who at this writing remains undefeated on the season, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.
Coach Peter Czerkas finished the 8th grade boys' basketball season with a win, as reported here last week. The season record was a disappointing 4-9, but the final win, over Penn Yan, avenged an earlier loss. He now moves to the girls' season and has released the following roster: Emmi Clark, Liz Cooley, Kaitlyn Crance, Morgan Doyle,
Mareasa Garver, Jaci Gross, Jolyne Kane, Kelsey Knitter, Liz Maloney, Nicole Mattoon, Shannon Murphy, and Meghan Tillman. Their home opener is January 24 at 4:15 in the high school gym.
Coach Wescott is working with the 7th graders but is having trouble coming up with a final roster. Some of the girls are academically ineligible, but she has been told they potentially could get their grades up and be able to play.
Newark was the opponent last Friday. The freshmen and the jv and varsity girls played at home while the jv and varsity boys traveled there.
Our freshman team has some height, but Newark had the advantage in that area. They were also quick and agile and got themselves into the bonus early in both the 2nd and 4th periods. Interestingly, their one weakness was free throws, but they did need them to win. They outscored us in each quarter and won, 60-33. Justin Huntsman had 8 points and was perfect from the foul line. Jake Turner added 7 points and was also perfect at the foul line. Kyle Consolie put in 6 points, and shot 50% from the foul line. Travis Goodman, playing in his first game, came off the bench to add 5 points but missed both his free throws.
Our jv girls had an even rougher time of it. The Newark girls were quick and had good hands. We had trouble with passes; while they seemed to score with each opportunity we couldn't buy a basket. We had 10 points at halftime and added 11 more in the second half and lost, 59-21.
The varsity girls had no better time of it. Again, the Newark team had quick hands and agile feet that created plenty of opportunities for them. Though we scored first we had trouble passing, holding on to the ball and shooting. In spite of it all we hung on to close the first quarter gap to 15-11, but we lost the second period, 17-9, and the game was essentially over. We had a ton of turnovers in that quarter while they rang up 12 points in the first 6 minutes of the period and another 6 in the remaining two minutes, thanks in large part to 3 three-pointers from Marissa Bunce, a former Midlakes player.
We never quit, though, and had our best scoring output in the 4th period (13) on the way to a 58-42 final
Alex Oaks and Aerica Maslyn both had "off" nights scoring (7 and 4 respectively), and Holly Rinaldo could not make the ball drop in (1 free throw) but they did better with the rebounding. Liz Donk came alive in the second half and scored 11 of her 13 points then (including 5/6 at the charity stripe). Whitney Dixon added 11 points.
This week's schedule has the varsity and jv boys at home on Tuesday, January 17 at 6pm; the wrestling team at home on Thursday at 6:30; and the freshmen and the jv and varsity girls at home Friday, starting at 4:15.
