Bristol Brothers Band Closes Concert Series
By Chip Rosebthal

About 200 people were in Rotary Park Thurs. evening to enjoy the final concert of this year's series. The Bristol Brothers Bluegrass Band played from 7:00 - 8:30 PM on a cool, nearly autumnal evening. Perry Cleveland, playing mandolin, Norm Darling on bass, and Don Springer playing guitar enchanted the crowd with fine music and the wonderful sound of bluegrass harmonies which are different than any other genre of music. The audience would never have known, but the band was missing a banjo player. The band and audience alike were hoping that all was well with him, as there was no word, even by the concert's end, as to the reason he was not there.
The band played many songs that they have recorded over the years, including material that was originally recorded on vinyl. The selection of music is quite large. They now have 5 CD's to their credit. All of the old material from records and tapes has been transferred to CD.
The concert opened with 'Mountain Dew', followed by 'Take This Hammer'. 'Salty Dog', 'I've Got a Mansion', 'Rag Time Annie' and an old civil war tune, 'Faded Coat of Blue' helped fill in the middle of the evening. There were many more tunes, some familiar and some that were known only to a few in attendance, but enjoyed by all. "Will the Circle be Unbroken', 'Who Will Sing For Me?', 'There's a Bluebird Singing' and 'Sweet Mountain Laurel' were among the songs in the later part of the evening. The Bristol Brothers closed the concert with two requested numbers, 'Bluegrass Lullaby', and 'Rocky Top' and, finally, 'Good Night Irene'.
Mayor Bill Hunter was on hand to greet the audience (as usual!) and to thank the sponsors of the yearly concert series. The sponsors are as follows: the Phelps American Legion, G.W. Lisk Co., Inc., the Clifton Springs Business Council, Ashton Place, the Spa Apartments, the Ontario National Bank, and the Clifton Springs Area Chamber of Commerce. Many thanks are deserved for the effort taken to bring this fine series of concerts to the area, where they can be enjoyed be anyone at no cost. I count myself among those who will be looking forward to next year's concerts.
