Phyllis M. Hebding…One of Our Women Who Served

Phyllis Welker was born in Darien, New York March 25th, 1924. She graduated from high school in 1942 at Alexander, New York. Following school, she worked for Curtis Wright Airplane Factory until enlisting in the Navy on Oct. 12, 1944. She went on active duty Dec. 28th, 1944.
Training began at Hunts College in the Bronx, following which Miss Welker reported to Pennsacola, Florida, where she worked in the training film office. Many of the films were for the Navy pilots' training. Miss Welker continued to work there until her discharge on May 7th, 1946, at the rank of Seaman 1st Class.
Starting in 1947, the newly discharged veteran attended two years at Morrisville Ag and Tech, majoring in Home Economics. She then worked as a cook in a girls' dorm at New Pulse State Teacher's College. Later, Miss Welker moved on to cook at the Batavia Children's Home.
Phyllis Welker proudly became Phyllis Hebding in 1951, when she married her husband Harold Hebding, with whom she currently shares their retirement years. They have four children, two girls and two boys, nine grandchildren, and by the end of the year will have three great grandchildren. Mrs. Hebding looks forward to a monthly news letter, "White Caps" for WAVES National, which keeps her current on places she served and people she served with. The Hebdings make their home in Phelps, New York.
