Robert R. Haas
ROMULUS - Robert R. Haas, 58, of 5854 Route 96, passed away Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006 at the Clifton Springs Hospital following a lengthy illness.
The family received friends on Monday, Jan. 30 at the Ovid Federated Church. Services were Tuesday, Jan. 31 at the church. A reception was held on the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.

Robert was born Oct. 14, 1947, in Utica, the son of James and Marie Welphe Haas. In 1966, Bob enlisted in the Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1970. He joined the armed forces once again in 1971, choosing the Army for a rewarding 24-year career, including three tours in Germany. Just before the Seneca Army Depot closed, Bob was the last First Sergeant in the 295th MP Company at the Depot. He was proud to have guarded the Depot to the very end.
Following his retirement from the military, Bob worked for New York state for nine years including the DDSO in Newark, the Dick VanDyke Clinic in Willard and the Willard Drug Treatment Facility. He retired from his Addictions Counselor position at the Willard Drug Treatment Facility on Jan. 5, 2005.
Bob's hard work and and dedication to his job were surpassed in importance only by his commitment to family. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and children and in later years, spoiling the grandchildren became the top priority. His concern for others was evidenced by his work with the Rev. Tony Roberts in the establishment of a "Spiritual Recovery Group" in Ovid.
In more recent years Bob enjoyed his membership in the Zion Fellowship Church in Canandaigua.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Diane Shaler Haas of Romulus; one son, Jason Haas (Ann) of Clifton Springs; one daughter, Danielle Thompson (Tony Seehase) of Waterloo; eight grandchildren, Brendan, Benjamin, Jenna, Sierra, Arianna, Alexis, Marissa and Ashton; four brothers, Richard of Albany, Henry of Florida, Gary of Holland Patent and David of Oriskany; three sisters, Dawn Inmam of Whitesboro, Donna Lee of Georgia and June Eberley of Whitesboro; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Bob in death were one brother, James "Sonny" Haas in 1982; and one son, Kyle C. Haas on March 6, 1998.
Josephine P. Lay-Green
NEWARK - Josephine P. Lay-Green, 96, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006 at Newark Manor.
Honoring her wishes, there were no prior calling hours. Following cremation, a graveside memorial will be at the convenience of the family. She will be buried in the Newark Cemetery on North Main Street.
Those wishing to make a memorial contribution, may make it to St. Michael's school in Newark.
Josephine was born Aug. 4, 1909, in Rochester, a daughter to Michael and Aneilla "Ella" Symanek Polakiewicz. She was the widow of Anson W. Lay Sr., whom she married on Dec. 25, 1928. Anson died unexpectedly at the age of 55 on Dec. 24, 1963. She remarried in 1967 to Willard Green. Mr. Green passed away in 2001, at the Wayne County Nursing Home.
Josephine was a lifetime member of St. Michael's Church in Newark. She was a member of the Canandaigua Ladies of the Moose. She had retired from the Newark State School after 17 years of employment.
Jo was a kind, loving, and gentle woman and will be missed by her family and all who knew and loved her. May she rest in peace, she has certainly earned it. We love you, Mom!
She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Lay Zulauf of Clyde; son, Ronald A. (Nancy) Lay of New Belanon, Ohio; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Veronica Chalker of Phelps; sisters-in-law, Doris Polakiewicz and Clara Polakiewicz of Newark; numerous nieces and nephews; and beloved, life-long friend, Dorothy Steves of Rochester; also a lifetime of good friends and neighbors.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Anson and Willard; a son, Anson W. "Sonny" Lay Jr.; sister, Jullia; brothers, Louie, Edward, Joseph, Teofel "Trip" and Leonard; and her parents.
Ida Elizabeth Peterson
PALMYRA/CLIFTON SPRINGS - Ida Peterson, 90, formerly of Palmyra, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006 at the MM Ewing Continuing Care Center in Canandaigua.
In keeping with her wishes, there were no prior calling hours. A funeral service to celebrate her life was offered Friday, Feb. 3 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs. Burial followed in Riverview Cemetery.
Friends may contribute, in Ida's memory, to Boy Scout Troop 59, care of Ron Steiner, 1136 County Road 7, Shortsville 14548.
Ida was born June 28, 1915, in Canandaigua, the daughter of the late John and Bessie Matrailles, and had lived in this area all of her life. She was a former member of the Home Bureau. Ida's passion in life was her family, and later in life she enjoyed traveling with them. Ida will be sadly missed by all of her loving friends and family.
She is survived by her son, William (Connie) Peterson of Clifton Springs; daughter Charlene Porter of Cleveland; seven grandchildren; three-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and sister, Irene O'Meal of Bath, Steuben County.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles in 1975; and brothers, Jerome, James and Peter Matrailles.
John W. Welsh
PHELPS - John W. Welsh, 78, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006 at the Canandaigua V.A. Hospital.
Friends called Sunday, Jan. 29 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 30 in the United Church of Phelps, with the Rev. Shirley Filiatreau officiating. Burial will be in Orleans Cemetery with Military Honors.

John was born Sept. 8, 1927, in Phelps, the son of the late Thomas P. and Gladys Sergent Welsh. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. John was a member of the Seeley B. Parish Phelps American Legion Post 457, a lifetime member of the Geneva V.F.W. and the Korean War Vets in Waterloo. He was also a member of the Phelps Exempt Volunteer Fire Dept.
He is survived by his son, Timothy (Sharon) Welsh of Phelps; daughters, Theresa Welsh of Newark and Tammera (Kevin) VanCamp of Phelps; grandchildren, Michael (Crystal) Welsh, Heidi (Tony) Willemsen, Mary Welsh Jeffery (Christy) VanCamp, and Jeremy and Justin VanCamp; great-grandchildren, Cole and Alex VanCamp and A. J. Willemsen; several nieces, nephews, cousin, and many special friends.
He was predeceased by his brother, Martin and sister, Gladys.
