FINGER LAKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO OFFER HARRY POTTER COURSE ONLINE

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (Feb. 9, 2006) - Finger Lakes Community College will offer an online course entitled "The Harry Potter Phenomenon" via WebCT, a centralized web-based program that provides course materials and assignments. The course will be taught by Trista Merrill, assistant professor of English and avid fan of the Harry Potter books.

"The Harry Potter Phenomenon" will allow students to explore many themes including race, class, gender, slavery, apartheid, loyalty, friendship, and good versus evil. The class will also discuss heroism and archetypes.

Offered as a Web course, students will learn and interact via the Web without coming to campus. Discussions about the book and its themes will be held in online forums. "Students' enthusiasm for the series makes for a very lively online experience. The students that enroll in this class have a deep interest in the topics and the literature," said Merrill.

"The Harry Potter Phenomenon" was originally offered as an internet course in the summer of 2005. Due to the success of the 2005 course, it will now be offered in the spring of 2006 from March 18-May 19. For more information and to register for the online course, contact the registrar's office at (585) 394-FLCC, ext. 7622 or by e-mailing registrar@flcc.edu.
