Phelps Community Center

The Phelps Community Center has come a long way from the dream by many to a real place of enjoyment by kids and adults alike.

The center is located in the old Banta Street primary school and has been welcomed by the residents of Phelps. The center has a gymnasium, cafeteria, a children's play room, a recreation room with pool table, air hockey, stereo, and other games.
There is also a computer lab for students and adults as well as a community room that is used for meetings by certain groups such as girl scouts and boy scouts. The center also rents space to a preschool and Dance Studio.

The center has a full time director, Tim VanDamme. Tim has lived in the area all of his life and joined the center last year. He oversees the day to day operations and handles scheduling of events. The center is mostly monitored and maintained by volunteers. So many residents give of their time, money and work to ensure the center keeps on going and gets better every day.

Many activities have taken place over the past year. Dodge ball tournaments, men's basketball, dances, roller skating parties, dinner theatres, harvest festival, archery events, and much more. The center held its first golf tournament in August as it major fund raiser. The funds raised were designated to help with the before and after school program starting in September.

The fitness center has outgrown its first home. It moved to a much larger area in the center in order to house more equipment which was donated by Wegman's. The new fitness director is Michelle Gosper. She is willing to answer any questions regarding membership, machine usage, and works to ensure the machines are in tip top shape. The fitness center has treadmills, stair stepper, and elliptical, recumbent bikes, stationary bike, multi-station weight machine, televisions and free weights. Hours are normally from
6:a.m.to 9:p.m. Monday to Saturday. Memberships available. She or one of the volunteers will be happy to give you a tour of the fitness center.

The Community Center is located in the same facility as the Village offices, the library, and a few other commercial businesses. The Phelps Food Cupboard will also be moving into the community center within the next couple months. Further expansion is almost complete for the before and after school program to ensure the community has availability to gym and game rooms.

The Board of Directors of the Phelps Community Center oversees the budget and ensures the policies and procedures are followed. They are President, Theresa Dorgan, Vice President Dave Lord, Secretary Steve Overslaugh, Treasurer, Floyd Ridley; Members at Large are Kevin Basset, Laura Smith, and Kris Walters.

A founders club has also been formed from those that originally worked so hard to ensure this center exists. Those members are Jim Cheney, Bob Hussar, Barry Lee, Dave Lord, Frank Murphy, Marge Norsen, Floyd Ridley and Aleta and Dean Williamson.

The center is mostly financially supported through the programs it runs as well as donations from the community. The generosity of many has made the center what it is today but the continuation of your monetary support is necessary to ensure the continued success and progress.
