CLIFTON SPRINGS YMCA, A COMMUNITY RESOURCE

CLIFTON SPRINGS AREA YMCA
By Gary Husk, Executive Director

Your Clifton Springs Area YMCA is entering into 129 years of dedicated service to the Clifton Springs area communities. Established in 1877, the growth of the activities, programs, and facilities has truly been remarkable. One thing that has remained a constant throughout all these years is the commitment to provide youth opportunities, services, and activities that certainly build a strong community, strong kids, and strong families.
The executive Director is Gary Husk. Gary is entering into his 35th year of working at the YMCA. Gary's philosophies of youth development and sense of community have been developed from working under the previous directors, John Brown and Joe Pitcher. The Child Care Director, a position created this past July, is Andrea Farrell who has been with the YMCA for the past 7 years. Luke Decker serves as Program & Building Supervisor. The child care staff is comprised of Amy Clark, Lynne Husk, and Meghan Clicquennoi, all three of whom have been with the YMCA for many years. During the Summer Day Camp Program, an additional 12 staff is hired comprised of area high school and college students and adults. Summer Day Camp registrations are available. Please call Andrea at (315)462-KIDS, or stop by the Palace building.
The YMCA has always been the hub of our community with programs and activities that involve everyone from youth to adults. The acquisition of the Palace Building, a much appreciated gift from I.A. Morris and G.W. Lisk a few years ago, has really been the boom to our expansion of youth programs offered. This building serves as the base for a very successful Summer Day Camp, which has over 100 participants and is the home to the very successful Before & After School Program that has over 60 kids enrolled. We offer a very results-oriented Reading Program. The "Palace" is also home to many community group meetings and events and hosts many types of occasions such as birthday parties, dances, ARC nights, Midlakes Chemical Free Graduation Night and many other events and activities. This building has truly become the community center of Clifton Springs.
This past year over 3,600 people participated in a YMCA activity or program. Youth Basketball had a total of 24 different age-group teams with close to 300 players and 60 volunteers; Youth Soccer totaled 15 teams with over 230 kids involved and 50+ volunteers. Your YMCA also conducts and sponsors the MIS Ski Club, Midlakes Youth Wrestling, Adult Volleyball and Basketball at Midlakes and Red Jacket, Tae Kwon-Do classes, field trips, summer swim lessons, ice skating (next year we hope!), skateboard park, tennis, and many more youth and family programs and events throughout the year.
We still do not charge a youth membership fee, our Open-Door and Safe Haven Policy ensures ALL area youth are welcome into the YMCA programs, regardless of where they reside. No other YMCA or facility can make such a boast in our area; this is a tradition we are so very proud of.
All this is made possible by the dedication, support, and efforts of the YMCA Board of Directors. This hard-working group is truly the driving force behind this organization. President is Jeff Criblear, Vice-Presidents are Stacy Davidoff and Tony DeSaine, Secretary is Michelle Hicks, and the Treasurer is Barb Criblear. Board Members consist of Eric Bengtson (past president), Jeff Burri, Drew Campbell, Terri DeCook, Tom Filieatreau, Jeff Gallahan, Paul Knipper, Kevin Maloney, John Maslyn, and Mike Pollot. Hollie Rinaldo is the student representative to the Board. These dedicated and caring individuals carry on the traditions and values of many Board Members before them. Give them thanks if you see them around, and if you are interested in joining the Y Board, please contact President Jeff Criblear.
The United Way, government grants, contributions, adult memberships, and program fees all support the YMCA, and of course those FUND RAISING EVENTS held throughout the year. The support from these events is truly remarkable and we thank the entire communities we serve for making them successful. Events such as the annual Dinner-Dance, Y-Golf Tournament, OCC Golf Tournament, Sulpher Springs Festival, Empire Farm Days, breakfasts, the sustaining membership drive, and the many other events held each year all go to support the continuation of the YMCA. A HUGE THANK-YOU FOR ATTENDING THESE WITH US!
Your YMCA also receives a large allocation from the United Way each year. Over $50,000 is allocated to our agency to carry out our programs and our mission. The United Way Campaign is getting underway now; please support this very important campaign, benefiting not only your YMCA, but all deserving agencies of Ontario County.
John Brown once penned a quote…"An activity for every youth - and every youth in an activity." This saying is truly a mission that still holds strong today. Please continue to support your local YMCA and make it possible for the missions to be carried out for the next generations of youth in the Clifton Springs and surrounding area. We all need to work together to make sure our kids are strong, our communities are strong, and our families are strong.
