Lowell R. Burke
Lowell Robert Burke, beloved husband, father and friend, died at the age of 81 on Monday, February 27, 2006, in Greensboro, NC, surrounded by dozens of family members and friends.
Born in Clifton Springs, NY, in 1924, Lowell started a successful floor covering/wall covering business, Burke's Floors and Walls, and retired in the 1980's. After retirement, he drove a school bus for the Clifton Springs/Phelps School District. In 1987, Lowell and his wife, Pauline, traveled extensively and eventually split their time between NY and Fla. Lowell was a man of passion and loved music and woodworking. He was deeply religious and was a valued member of the Clifton Springs United Methodist Church for most of his life and spent much of his time on benevolent works. He maintained perfect attendance at the Rotary Club for almost 45 years and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a charter member of the Chamber of Commerce of Clifton Springs and served for many years in the Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Pauline; two sons, Lee (Carol) of Florida and Lynn (Virgie) of North Carolina; a daughter, Kimberly Garner (Donnie) of North Carolina; a sister, Shirley LeBlanc (Russell) of Nevada; and a multitude of and nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His family would like to thank the scores of people who have supported them with prayers, cards, gift and love. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27405. Final arrangements for a memorial service at the Clifton Springs United Methodist Church are still being made and will be announced at a later date.
Douglas Coons
MANCHESTER - Douglas Coons, 60 died Monday, Feb. 27, 2006 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Friends called Wednesday, March 1 at Halsted-Patrick Funeral Home in Manchester. Funeral services were Thursday at the funeral home.
Doug was born July 2, 1945, in Canandaigua. He was a member of the Canandaigua Police Department for 22 ½ years and the Ontario County Sheriff's Department for 6 ½ years.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene A. Coons; mother, Catherine B. Coons; six children, George (Jennifer) Coons, Douglas (Diane) Coons, Elizabeth (Russell Hadlock) Short, Wendy (Keith) Ball, Marianne (Shane Walker) Coons and Kathy (Clifford) Dailey; 15 ½ grandchildren; sister, Loretta (Anthony) Reish; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, George L. Coons.
Myrtle A. Forgue
CLIFTON SPRINGS - Myrtle A. Forgue, 63, of 1768 Pearl St. ,died on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006 at the Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic.
Friends attended a memorial service on Wednesday, March 1 at the Oaks Corners Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ellen Donnan Carroll officiating. Burial will be in Whitney Cemetery in the spring.
It is suggested that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station. P.O. Box 4777, New York 10163.
Myrtle was born on April 3, 1942, in Honeoye Falls, the daughter of the late Winfield and Ruth Henning Dyer. She retired from the Alterman Trucking Company in Florida before moving to Clifton Springs five years ago. She enjoyed gardening and ceramics. Myrtle also enjoyed liquid embroidery, macramé and crocheting clothes for Barbie dolls. Most of all Myrtle enjoyed sitting and visiting with people.
She is survived by her children, Darlene (Gregory) James of Lakeland, Fla., Lorie (Kenneth) Madigan of Clifton Springs, Jackie Postma of Miami, Fla., William (Renee) Forgue of Winter Haven, Fla.; grandchildren, Medina Madigan, Joshua Rosser, Amber James, Christopher Rushing, Amanda Collins, Courtney James, Bailea Postma, Jeffery Forgue, David Postma; brother, Walter Dyer of Honeoye Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Beverley Denton.
Clara Schindler
LYONS/PHELPS - Clara Brandt Schindler, 97, died peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006 in her apartment at Vienna Gardens in Phelps.
Friends called Tuesday, Feb. 28 at the Weeks-Keysor Funeral Home in Lyons. Funeral services were Wednesday, March 1 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jack Bailey officiating. Burial will be in South Lyons Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Charity of one's choice.
Mrs. Schindler was born March 18, 1908, at the family home on Brandt Road in Lyons, the daughter of William and Augusta Bramer Brandt. She retired as a foreperson after 27 years from the National Biscuit Co. Clara was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Lyons, North American Bluebird Society, Upstate Bluebird Society and she was a great lover of animals and wildlife.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews; and good friend, Jerry Orr.
Clara was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Carl in 1985; brother, Louis Brandt in 1934; and sisters, Anna Metz in 1953 and Rose Eckert in 1996.
Esther C. Coonrod
LYONS - Esther C. Coonrod, 78, of Ross Road, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital.
A memorial reception was held Sunday, March 5 at Donselaar's Party House in Clyde to celebrate her life.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Esther was born Jan. 28, 1928, in the town of Galen. She retired in 1990 from the Xerox Corp. in Webster after 20 years of employment. Since retirement, she loved working with her adopted children at the Newark Head Start.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda (Gene) Killian of Phelps; four grandchildren, Valoree (Mike) Pembroke of Penfield, Robert Morales of Lyons, John Killian of Phelps and Christopher Morales of Walworth; brothers and sisters, Marvin, Clayton, Bernice, Kenneth and Audrey; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sherman, in 1996; and daughter, Cathy Morales, in 1993.
Charles DeMay
SHORTSVILLE - Charles DeMay, 78, died Saturday, March 11, 2006 at the House of John in Clifton Springs.
Friends called Wednesday, March 15 at Halsted-Patrick Funeral Home in Manchester. A funeral Mass was held Thursday, March 16 at St. Dominic Church in Shortsville.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Charles' memory may be made to the House of John, 14 Spring St., Clifton Springs 14432 or the St. Dominic Church Memorial Fund, 6 Canandaigua St., Shortsville 14548.
Charles was born May 17, 1927, in Phelps, the son of Lewis and Emma Descamp-DeMay. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War. After the war, Charles was an operating engineer for Local 832 in Rochester for 40 years and worked hard on the Kodak building, New York State Thruway and the Pure Water Project in Rochester. He was in the Guinness Book of Records for Mole Drilling. He was a member of the Phelps American Legion, Canandaigua Moose Club, International Union of Operating Engineers, and the Shortsville Rod and Gun Club. He was also a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club and the National Rifle Association. Charles was a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Twitchell-DeMay; three sons, Paul (Cathy) DeMay of Canandaigua, Patrick (Lauri) DeMay of Shortsville, and James (Tracy) DeMay of Manchester; four daughters, Suzanne (Jeff) Marinelli of Canandaigua, Mary Jo (Tom) Corsaro of Bloomfield, Christine (Tate) Colburn of Shortsville, and Jennifer (Scott) Notebaert of Shortsville; 14 grandchildren; three step-children, Scott (Sue Twitchell of Clifton Springs, Kip (Tracy) Dunton Twitchell of Rushville, and Lori Jones of Rushville; seven step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Pauline Bremer of Phelps, Elsie Hutchinson of Lilydale, and Frances Vandemortel of Phelps.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie Bolan-DeMay in 1988; brothers, Lewis and Arthur DeMay; and sisters, Evalyn Finewood and Mary Haers.
Richard L. Dickens
CLIFTON SPRINGS - Richard L. Dickens, 89, of 2520 McBurney Road, died Monday, March 13, 2006 at home with his family by his side.
Friends called Wednesday, March 15 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Thursday, March 16 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Phelps with the Rev. Thomas Mull officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.
It is suggested that memorial donations be made to the Ontario-Yates Hospice, 756 Pre-Emption Road, Geneva 14456, or the House of John, 14 Spring St., Clifton Springs 14432, or to a charity of one's choice.
Mr. Dickens was born March 30, 1916, in Canandaigua, the son of the late James and Harriet McClouth Dickens. He was a member of the St. Felix/St. Francis Catholic Community. Mr. Dickens worked for Papec of 25 years and retired form the Ontario County Courthouse. He was a member of the Clifton Springs Grange for 70 years. Mr. Dickens loved music and enjoyed playing his guitar every day. He also enjoyed furniture refinishing.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Lucille Dickens; two daughters, Yvonne Cook of Buffalo and Joan (Wayne) David of Newark; five grandchildren, Ellen (Jeffrey) Gardner of Tonawanda, Alison (Paul) LoVullo of Clarence, Leslie Cook of Tonawanda, James (Wendy) Colacino of Newark; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Carlton (Alison) Dickens of Virginia and Foster Dickens of Addison; and several nieces and nephews.
Nancy J.A. White
PHELPS - Nancy J.A. White, 63, of 37 Park St., died Friday, March 10, 2006 at the Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic.
Friends called Tuesday, March 14 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 15 at the United Church of Phelps - with the Rev. Shriley Filiatreau officiating.
It is suggested that contributions be made to one's favorite charity.
Nancy was born on May 6, 1942, in Bossier City, La., the daughter of Virgil and Edra M. Dawson Dorgan. She worked for the Newark Developmental Center and was a cashier for the Phelps P&C. Nancy retired from the Ontario County Jail as a corrections officer.
She was a devoted grandmother and enjoyed making crafts and sewing. She handmade 90 percent of her Christmas gifts that were very special to receive.
She is survived by her husband of 33 years, David G. White of Phelps; children, Kelly (Jody) Wells of Fulton, Shelly (Robert) Thompson of Fountain, Colo., Scott Hubbard of Stanley and Ross Gansz of Lyons; her mother, Edra Mae Dorgan of Phelps; sisters, Charlotte (Dennis) McCarthy of Texas, Wanda Middlebrook of Phelps and Judy (James) Loughlin of Farmington; brother, Bobby (Theresa) Dorgan of Phelps; grandchildren, Rachel Wells, Nancy (Chris) Stevens, Celeste Wells, Shauna and Tanner Thompson and John-Ross Gansz; great-granddaughter, Celeste Stevens; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Virgil Dorgan; and sister Patsy Blackburn.
