Linford M. Croll

      PHELPS - Linford M. Croll Jr. 83, of 110 Clifton St., died Saturday, March 18, 2006 at his home.
      Friends called Thursday, March 23 at the Cheney Funeral Home in P helps. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
      Mr. Croll was born Dec. 23, 1922, in Akron, the son of the late Linford Sr. and Maude Stover Croll. He used to deliver milk for Everson's Dairy, was a mail carrier in Phelps and retired as a security officer from the Seneca Army Depot.
      He is survived by is sons, Steven (Cynthia) Croll of Phelps, Douglas (Sharon) Croll of Florida and Kenneth Croll of Kingman, Ariz.; friend, Verna Clark of Phelps; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Croll.


Charles E. Garling Sr.

      GENEVA - Charles E. Garling Sr., 87, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at the home of his daughter, Elsie Mae Shorter (with whom he made his home since 1985). The family moved to Bandera, Texas, in 1995. He fought a long battle against pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure and was cared for at home with the help of Vista Care Hospice program.
      His wish was to be cremated with no service.
      Memorial donations may be made to the following animal rescue, CCPAL, PO Box 2000, Bandera, TX 78003.
      Mr. Garling was born March 6, 1919, in Fairport, to Charles and Leora Dickinson Garling. His father died in November before he was born.
      He attended Clifton Springs Central School, then started working as a movie projectionist in Geneva and was a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 102.
      During World War II, he was stationed in Papua, New Guinea, with the Army Corps of Engineers. They were in charge of building roadways, landing strips and piers for staging combat assaults in the Pacific Corridor. He was also company projectionist and photographer. Following his discharge from the Army with the rank of Staff Sergeant he worked at Republic Steel Company in Cleveland before moving back to Geneva, where he was again a projectionist and also worked for the Geneva Paper Company.
      Mr. Garling moved from Geneva to San Jose, Calif., in 1964 and was in IATSE Local 431. After 47 years, he retired in 1982 and moved to Sonora, CA. He joined the local Cedar Ridge Volunteer Fire Department and was the equipment officer and also drove the snow plow. His other hobbies included gardening, cooking, photography, traveling, doing cement work and just puttering and staying busy. Cactus, yellow roses and gardenias were his favorites. Cats were the biggest part of his life. He enjoyed them, and they stayed with him during his final days keeping him warm and at peace.
      One of his greatest satisfactions was being reunited with his two older sisters. In 1923, his oldest sister, Viola Dorothy, was put on an orphan train and went to New York City. She was later adopted in the Finger Lakes Region. His daughter, Elsie, contacted numerous sites trying to locate her. Viola Dorothy was found in 1990 and came to Conneaut, Ohio. Marie, the other sister, came from Florida and the three were reunited. Then they traveled to Clyde, where another reunion was made with the remaining five brothers and sisters. This reunion was published in 1992 Family Circle magazine as one of the Children Aid Societies greatest family reunions through the efforts of Helen Steiner.
      He is survived by his daughter, Elsie (Michael) Shorter of Bandera, Texas; two sons, Charles of Clifton Springs and Harry (Barbara) of Newark; sister, Betty Jane (Frank) Palermo of Newark; two brothers, David R. Kesel and Robert Clapton, both of Clifton Springs; five grandchildren, Bobbie Jo (Lonnie) Halladay, Tara Payne, Charles E. Garling II, Jason Garling and Justin Garling; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
      He was predeceased by his parents; first wife, Vivian M. Duhaime (mother of his daughter); second wife, Doris M. Washburn Garling (mother of his three sons); son, Robert Paul Garling; grandson, Harry W. Garling Jr.; three sisters, Viola Dorothy Call of Bloomington, Calif., Marie Fox of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Esther Atkinson of Phelps; and brother, William Kesel of Phelps.


C. Leona McKane

      GENEVA/PHELPS - C. Leona Vosburgh McKane, 97, formerly of 63 Highland Ave. in Geneva, passed away Thursday, March 23, 2006 at the Seneca Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Waterloo, where she had been a resident for 13 years.
      Following Leona's request, calling hours were not observed. A private graveside service will be in Glenwood Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Activities Fund, Seneca Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 200 Douglas Drive, Waterloo 13165.
      Leona was born May 16, 1908, in Phelps, a daughter of Lee and Grace Vanderpoel Vosburgh. She graduated as valedictorian, class of 1926 from the Phelps Union and Classical School, and was a graduate of Central City Business Institute in Syracuse. Leona was employed in the secretarial profession at Hobart College in her earlier years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Geneva.
      She is survived y her nephew, F. Lee (Janet) Walters of Phelps; and a niece, Suzanne, living out of state.
      She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Robert G. McKane in 1992; her parents; and sister, Gladys (Francis) Walters.


Donald E. Shaw

      CLIFTON SPRINGS - Donald Shaw, 69, of Prestige Drive in Clifton Springs, passed away peacefully Friday, March 17, 2006 at home.
      In keeping with his wishes, there were no funeral services.
      Friends may make contributions to Donald's family, c/o Jeannette Shaw, 55 Prestige Drive, Clifton Springs 144321.
      Donald was born July 17, 1936, in Lockport and had served his country in the Army in the 1960s. He was employed by Monroe Roadways in Fairport. Donald will be sadly missed by all of his loving friends and family.
      He is survived by his loving wife, Jeannette Shaw; sister, Carole Ostroski of North Carolina; and several children and grandchildren.


Joan "J' Williams Race

      NEWARK - Joan "J' Williams Race went home to be with our heavenly Father on Saturday, March 18, 2006.
      Friends called Wednesday, March 22 at John C. Johnson Funeral Home Inc., in Canandaigua. Her funeral Mass was celebrated by her dear friend, the Rev. William Cosgrove, on Thursday, March 23 at St. Dominic's Church in Shortsville. Interment will be in St. Rose Cemetery in Shortsville at a later date.

      Joan was born Aug. 6, 1936, in Shortsville, the daughter of David and Marie Bement Williams. Through determination and skill, Joan put herself through nursing school. She was an excellent psychiatric nurse and alcoholic counselor at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Canandaigua for 27 years. She dedicated her life to caring for others. Joan was a devoted caregiver for her brother, Jim for many years. She was an exceptional mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and professional. Joan will be extremely missed and loved forever.
      She leaves behind to cherish her memories, her loving and devoted children, Bonnie (Jim) Smithers, Cindy (Phil) Harris, both of Farmington, and Ron (Susan) Race of Hilton; two grandsons, Daniel Race and Stephen Harris; four brothers, Robert (Norma) Williams of Palmyra, Harry (Bev) Williams of Shortsville, Jimmy Williams of Newark and Ronald (Char) Williams of Canandaigua; two sisters, Irene Bremer of Newark and Dolores Ferguson of Canandaigua; and many nieces and nephews.


Margaret Goellner

      CLIFTON SPRINGS - Margaret Goellner, 84, of Broad Street, passed away Thursday, March 23, 2006 at Clifton Springs Hospital.
      Friends called Wednesday, March 29 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs, where services followed. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Port Gibson Cemetery.
      Friends may contribute to the Finger Lakes Community Cancer Center, 6 Coulter Rd. Clifton Springs 14432, in Margaret's memory.
      Margaret was born Sept. 13, 1921, in Clifton Springs, the daughter of the late Edward and Bernetta Lindner, and lived in the area all her life. She worked at the Clifton Springs Hospital in the dining room for many years. She loved to spend her time with her family, whom she adored. She will be sadly missed by all her loving friends and family.
      She is survived by her sisters, Anastasia Denison and Jane Maslyn, both of Clifton Springs; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was predeceased by her husband, Ludwig, in 1977; sister, Sally; and brother, Edward.


Beatrice M. Schafer

      PHELPS - Mrs. Beatrice M. Schafer, of 46 Ontario St., died on her 97th birthday, Thursday, March 30, 2006 at the Clifton Springs Extended Care Unit.
      There were no calling hours. Friends attended a memorial service Saturday, April 1 at Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps, with the Rev. William Reigle officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
      It is suggested that contributions be made to the Phelps Historical Society, 66 Main St., Phelps 14432; or Phelps Ambulance Inc., PO Box 81, Phelps 14432.
      Mrs. Schafer was born March 30, 1909, in Williamson, the daughter of the late William and Muriel Cottrell Hammond. She was a member of the United Church of Phelps, The Home Bureau, and a longtime member of the Phelps Croquet Club. She retired from the cafeteria at the Phelps Central School.
      She is survived by her children, Gerald (Barbara) Schafer of Phelps, Kathleen (Robert) Buttermore of Ontario, and June (Gordon) Gardner of Clifton Springs; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, who died in 1991.


Elsie D. Beman Teed

      WATERLOO - Elsie D. Teed, 84, went to be with her heavenly Father Thursday, March 23, 2006.
      Friends called Monday, March 27 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs. Funeral services followed at the Faith Community Church of Phelps, with the Rev. William Malone officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Gideon's Bible International, P.O. Box 202, Geneva 14456.
      Elsie was born Nov. 6, 1921, in Lockport, the daughter of the late Fred and Ethel Beman, and lived in Waterloo for many years. On Dec. 24, 1941, she married Lawrence H. Teed. Elsie was a member of the Waterloo Assembly of God for many years. Mom was a very loving wife, mother and grandma. She will be sadly missed by all.
      She is survived by her sons, Lawrence F. (Katie) Teed, Norman (Grace) Teed, Ronald (Ruth) Teed and Russell (Doreen) Teed; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.


Gary A. Camacho

      NEWARK - Gary A. Camacho, 43, died Saturday, April 1, 2006 in Newark.
      Friends called Thursday, April 6 at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home in Newark. Funeral services were Friday, April 7 at the funeral home with the Rev. Steve Matteson officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Phelps.

      Mr. Camacho was born Aug. 23, 1962, in Clifton Springs, the son of Miguel and Catherine O'Dell Camacho. Gary was a sound engineer for his own company, Music Production Unlimited. He played guitar in his two bands, Rude Mood and Double Vision. Gary donated much of his time and talents to special fundraisers for families in need. He was also a member of the Wayne County Motorcycle Club.
      He is survived by his wife, Pamela Schetrompf Camacho; a son, Caleb; a daughter Shania; his parents, Miguel "Mike" and Catherine O'Dell Camacho; two brothers, Michael (Darci) and Donald, all of Newark; three sisters, Linda (Jim) Foster of Newark, Debra Smith of Tampa, Fla., and Michele (Ron) Harper of Newark; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and friends.
      He was predeceased by his sister, Terri Camacho in 1989.


Janice McCormick Lootens

      PHELPS - Janice McCormick Lootens, 49, of 647 Neider Road, died Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at the Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic.
      Friends called Thursday, April 6 at the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps. A Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, April 7 at St. Francis Church in Phelps. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in St. Francis Cemetery.

      Jan was born Jan. 17, 1957, in Hartford, Conn. The daughter of Howard F. McCormick Jr. and May Dalton. She was a member of St. Francis Church in Phelps. She went to the Barbizon School of modeling and attended the Marion S. Whalen School of nursing. Jan worked at Huntington Living Center as activities director and also worked at Seneca Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center. Jan was also a friend of Bill W.
      She is survived by her husband of eight years, Robert Lootens of Phelps; stepson Sgt. Jonathan Lootens of Hawaii; father, Howard F. (Judy) McCormick Jr. of Windsor, Conn.; sisters, Maureen M. (Fiancée James Benedicks) Strader of Romulus and Joan (Philip) Thompson of Mattaponi, Va.; brother, Howard F. (Kathy) McCormick III of Hartford, Conn.; stepfather, Herman Glassman; half sisters, Darlene McCormick, Holly (fiancée Mike Curley) McCormick and Lynn McCormick; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and her beloved pets, Millie, Misty, Freddie, Winter and Suzie.
      She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Elizabeth Glassman; and her brother, Robert McCormick.


William "Willum" Maslyn


      CLIFTON SPRINGS - William "Willum" Maslyn, 45, of Pearl Street Extension, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, April 4, 2006 in Maryland.
      Friends called Sunday, April 9 at the Patrick Funeral Home in Clifton Springs. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, April 10 at St. Felix Church in Clifton Springs. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery.
      Friends may contribute to the American Diabetes Association in Willum's memory.
      Willum was born Feb. 22, 1961, in Clifton Springs, the son of Elmer Jr. and Barbara Maslyn, and had lived in the area all of his life. He worked for many years on his family's farm while in school and later as a herdsman for Reedland Farms. He was an avid NASCAR and Giants fan. Willum will be sadly missed by all of his loving family and friends.
      He is survived by his mother, Barbara Maslyn of Clifton Springs; son Samuel Weber of Virginia; brothers and sisters, Charles (Vicky) Maslyn, Lori (Alan) Norsen, Jim (Lisa) Maslyn, and Janet (Mark) Wheeler, all of Clifton Springs; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
      He was predeceased by his father, Elmer J. Maslyn Jr.; and a niece, Ashlee Wheeler.
     


Elizabeth Marie Randall

      PHELPS - Elizabeth Marie Randall, 90, of 38 Orchard Park, died Thursday, April 13, 2006.
      There were no prior calling hours. Funeral services were Sunday, April 23, 2006 at the United Church of Phelps, with the Rev. Shirley Filiatreau officiating. Private burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
      Memorial donations may be made to the United Church of Phelps, 58 Main St., Phelps 14432; or Ontario-Yates Hospice, 756 Pre-Emption Road, Geneva 14456.
      Mrs. Randall was born Jan. 5, 1916 in Geneva, the daughter of the late Albert and Vesta Mahon Oaks. She was a member of the United Church of Phelps. Mrs. Randall previously owned the Clifton Springs Clothing Store and then worked in the medical records department at Clifton Springs Hospital, from where she retired. She was an avid golfer, and meticulous at making crafts, Christmas ornaments and personalized newborn pillows. She was a talented artist and enjoyed charcoal drawing, loved gardening and beating her children at card games. Most of all she was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.
      She is survived by her children, Ovid (Bobbie) Randall of Clifton Springs, Dale (John) Prongo of Phelps, Sherry (Don) Wilkes of Phelps and Candy (Jack) Jones of Canandaigua; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Berta Homes of Wake Forest, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
      She was predeceased by her husband Ovid Randall, who died in 1972; three sisters, Ruth May, Virginia Pearson and Dorothy Young; and brother Dick Oaks.
      Funeral arrangements were made with the Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps.


Frances E. Schmidt

      ROCHESTER/CLIFTON SPRINGS - Frances E. Schmidt, 93, formerly of Rochester and Clifton Springs, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 3, 2006 at the Seneca Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center while surrounded by her family.
      A Memorial Service was Saturday, April 22 at the Interlaken Reformed Church, 8315 Main St., Interlaken.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Walker Bible Baptist Church, 1425 Walker Lake Ontario Road, Hilton 14468 or to Odosagih Bible Conference, PO Box 107, Machias 14101.
      In addition to other family members, Frances is survived by her daughter, Aneta Glover of Interlaken; and a first cousin, Fred (Velma) Swick of Ovid.
