MARCH 17, 2006
Coach Maher has released the roster for the varsity baseball team. It has mostly juniors and seniors, as expected. One sophomore, Matt Jensen, will play in the outfield and do some pitching. Other outfielders are: seniors Jesse DeBoover; Torey Pieters, who also will pitch; Jordan Wilson, who will also pitch; juniors Bryant Lead, also a pitcher, and Greg VanderBrook. Playing the infield will be seniors Craig Falkey, Randy Kuhlman, and Zach Maslyn, and Mark DeCook, who will also pitch; and juniors Tommy Goodman, Adam Norsen, Chris Galliher, and Neil Scheible, also a pitcher. Brett Adams will catch.
Coach Young, fresh from the basketball court, has released the jv baseball roster. Josh DeBoover, Ethan Thornton, Tyler Turner, Colin Hotchkiss, Elijah Guilliame, Josh Guilliame, Andrew Hilfiker, Kodey Clark, and Tristen Ester will play the outfield. Infielders are Jake Clyde, Andrew Griffee, Justin Buttaccio, Travis Goodman and Kyle Tillman. Eric Minns is set to catch and to do some pitching. Also scheduled to pitch are Kyle Tillman, Tristen Ester, and Jake Clyde. Eric Minns is listed as a catcher and a pitcher, and Kyle Consolie as a pitcher/utility fielder.
These two teams are scheduled to begin play on April 6, when the varsity team will travel to Waterloo and their jv team will come here. The game should start at 4:15.
The varsity will travel to Mynderse on April 12, with the jv playing at home. The varsity home opener is scheduled for April 13, against Pal Mac. They will be leaving for Durham, North Carolina on April 16 (Easter) where they hope to play four games before returning on Friday.
Coach Jeff Panek will be working with the modified baseball team when their practices begin next month.
I have been unable to get end-of-season information from the wrestling teams or to catch up with the other spring sports coaches. Maybe next week.

APRIL 12
Last week's weather was not the best for sports. JV tennis Coach Webb said it best. "Monday's match with Victor was rained out; Wednesday's match with Pal-Mac was snowed out. Today (last Thursday), however, we traveled to Aquinas and actually played!" The team lost to Aquinas, 2-3. Mike Green won at 2nd singles, and Nick Flye won at 3rd singles. Kevan Donlon and Joe Avanzato won the first set at 2nd doubles, lost the second set 6-7 and went on to lose the third set also.
Surprisingly, the varsity tennis team, hosting Aquinas, lost by the same score, 2-3. Those two wins were from AJ DeSain at 2nd singles and Dan Cristofaro and Mike Cardinale at 1st doubles.
The varsity boys' lacrosse team played Waterloo last Tuesday and jumped out to an early two goal lead before shooting themselves in the foot with a series of penalties, giving Waterloo "man up" opportunities of which they took full advantage. On the bright side, Coach Doan reported "we played much better against Waterloo than (we had the previous week against) Aquinas so there was improvement, but we still need to work on the performance of our offense."
The team apparently did some work because the next game, against Mynderse, was a 7-6 overtime win. Jon Briggs scored 3 times, including the game winner. Glen Stevenson added a pair or goals and an assist. Clay Hemminger and Ryan McConnon had the other two goals.
I have not yet seen the jv boys' lacrosse team, but Coach Fitch brought me up to date. The first game was a home loss to Bath, 14-4. Conor Hogan and Jared Strub scored; Tom Cheney and Ben Uveges scored and assisted on other goals.
At Aquinas it was a battle but the final score was a 5-4 loss, quite disappointing since we had a 4-1 lead early. Travis Bevins scored twice, Tom Cheney and Randy Sinack each scored once, and Ben Uveges had an assist. Mike Iannone had 13 saves in goal.
On April Fool's Day the team got its first win, against Bloomfield, 8-4. We led the entire game and this time did not let it slip away. Randy Sinack had 3 goals, Travis Bevins 2 goals, Conor Hogan 1 goal and 1 assist, Greg Marks 1 goal and 1 assist, Tom Cheney 1 goal, and Jared Strub 1 assist. Mike Iannone had 6 saves.
The jv game against Mynderse also went into overtime, but this one was a marathon - Tom Cheney scored the game winner 23 seconds into the 4th overtime period to give us the 2-1 victory. Randy Sinack, assisted by Ben Uveges, scored our other goal.
It was a great defensive battle, anchored by Mike Iannone with 18 saves in goal and great teamwork by the defense: Eric VanHooft, Ryan Teed, Justin Huntsman, Jason Batchellor, Andrew Smith, Dan Sinack, and Greg Marks.
Coach Farr described the varsity girls' lacrosse game Wednesday as "disappointing." "We were up 7-4 with a bout 12 minutes to go and lost, 9-8." "We lost the game in the midfield - the offense was stagnant and the defense didn't create enough turnovers. We're going to work on that in practice!"
The varsity baseball team won the season opener, 4-1, against Waterloo. Starting pitcher Jordan Wilson pitched 6 strong innings, working 10 Ks, giving up 5 hits, and no earned runs. Mark DeCook went 2/3 at bat, with a double and an RBI. Greg VanderBrook and Zach Maslyn each hit doubles, and Jesse DeBoover had 2 RBIs.
The varsity softball team did not have the same success. They lost, 13-1. Ashley Hall pitched pretty well, according to Coach Husk, and Waterloo hit well, but we had no "angels in the outfield." It was more like gremlins; the errors sunk us. Steph Groff at shortstop made a double play. We had four hits, from Steph, Liz Donk, Ashley, and Laura Hopkins. Liz scored when we were able to move her over after her hit so she was in position to score on a passed ball.
The jv baseball team defeated Waterloo, 7-2. A close (3-2) game was blown open in the 5th when we plated 2 runs and followed that up with 1 in the 6th and 1 in the 7th. Elijah Guillame had a big day at the bat, going 2/3 with 2 doubles that resulted in 3 RBIs and he also scored a run. Jake Clyde was the winning pitcher, going the distance, striking out 12 and giving up only one earned run. He also pitched his way out of a no out, bases loaded situation in the 6th.
Both track teams won non-league meets last Thursday against Geneva. The girls' score was 92-44. Cortni McGregor won 3 events, as did Kristin McGregor (jumps) and Tiffany Johnston. Sam Clay-Reagan and Sara Green each won 2 events, and Katie Litts and Kaitlin VanderWeide each won one event.
The boys' score was 79-61. Kyle Brown won the 800 meter, the 1600m and the 3200m races. Jamison Reed won the 110m and the 400m hurdles. Adam Scheele and Andrew VanNostrand tied at 7'6" in the pole vault.

APRIL 26
The jv baseball team provided the only home game last week, playing Waterloo last Thursday morning, a perfect day for a baseball game. Tristen Ester pitched; Travis Goodman was catching, a new starting position for him since Eric Minns, scheduled to be the starting catcher, was moved to the varsity the previous week to cover some inelligibility problems.
The first Waterloo batter reached base on an error but was erased at 2nd when the next batter got a hit. I had to leave in the bottom of the 4th when the score was 10-1, Midlakes. Tristan by then had 6Ks, 1W, and had allowed only 4 hits. Some highlights: Tyler Turner made a great catch in center field to end the first inning; Elijah Guilliame worked a walk in the lead-off slot and came around to score; Colin Hotchkiss picked up 2 RBIs on a double in the same inning; we batted around in the 2nd, picking up 6 runs (Andrew Griffee's walk pushed over 1 run, Travis Goodman's 1B produced 2 RBIs, and Tyler Turner added on also).
Maybe Thursday is their day. The previous Thursday (April 13) this team had traveled to Pal-Mac and won, 20-4. We fell behind 4-2 after 3 innings, no thanks to several errors, but then the bats "woke up." We plated 10 runs in the top of the 4th to take a 12-4 lead and were just getting started. Jake Clyde, Andrew Griffee, Travis Goodman, Kyle Tillman, Colin Hotchkiss, and Tyler Turner each had 2 hits for Midlakes. Hotchkiss had 3 RBIs that day; Tillman and Turner each contributed two RBIs. Josh DeBoover reached base 4 times and scored each time.
The varsity team had headed for North Carolina on Easter, and the news from there was not good. All the reports I read were losses.
The all-league selections for basketball and wrestling were published last week. Some of this has been reported here already but bears repeating because it's quite an honor. Whitney Dixon was the only Midlakes girl named to the first team all-league. Her career includes two 21 point games; she finished with 702 career points, with 340 rebounds and 166 assists. Alex Oaks was named to the second team; Liz Donk and Hollie Rinaldo received honorable mention.
Caleb Frederick was named to the second team all-league; Greg VanderBrook was named to the third team; Ben Sheppard received special mention; Torey Pieters received honorable mention.
We had three wrestlers named all-league: Morgan Hoven, Chris Teed, and Tyler Brooks-Lambert. Morgan had a 37-1 record last winter, with 13 pins, and won his weight class at 7 tournaments, including the Section V Class BBBB. He's 3rd on the Midlakes all-time win list.
Chris Teed's record was 30-2, with 20 pins, and won his weight class at 6 tournaments, including the Section V Class BBBB. He is 5th on the Midlakes single season wins list.
Tyler's record was 29-11 with 11 pins. He was the runner-up in his weight class at Sectionals and has plenty of time to improve on that and the other statistics since this was his first year on varsity, and he's a freshman.
There's something going on every afternoon this week, and even 2 games on Saturday morning - plenty of opportunities to see the kids in action.
