SENATOR NOZZOLIO LAUNCHES AN ON-LINE PETITION IN SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION TO CAP THE
SALES TAX ON GASOLINE
|
Albany-Citing the severe financial impact that increased gas prices will have on all consumers, State Senator Michael F. Nozzolio (R-Fayette) has started an on-line petition to urge motorists to show their support for his gas tax cap plan by visiting his website at www.senatornozzolio.com and clicking the link to "Join the Fight."
"The high cost of gasoline has placed a tremendous financial burden on consumers," Senator Nozzolio said. "As the summer travel season quickly approaches, it is essential that we enact legislation that will provide financial relief to New York State families who have no control over the cost of gasoline."
Senator Nozzolio's plan would "cap" the sales tax, which is indexed to the price of gas and rises along with prices, on just the first $2 of the per gallon price. That would mean an immediate savings of 8 cents per gallon for gas priced at $3, or $320 million a year for motorists statewide.
Gas prices across New York State are already breaking the $3 a gallon barrier, and experts predict that summer prices could outpace last year's local record of $3.33 a gallon, reached last September, by mid-summer.
"In the past three years, the price of a gallon of gasoline has doubled. The tax relief provided in this legislation will be realized by both employers and residential motorists alike and will have a huge positive impact on a major aspect of our everyday life," Nozzolio concluded.

EVERY WEEK IS NOW STATE SALES TAX FREE WEEK
|
For far too long, New York State residents have been overburdened with tax
increases that have killed jobs and destroyed hopes for economic growth.
Since 1995, we have made great strides towards reducing the tax burden in
New York but still need to do more to help ensure hard-working men and
women can keep more of their hard earned money.
The people of New York State have the right to demand a state government
that is both responsive to their needs and accountable for its actions. To
fulfill that commitment, my colleagues and I worked diligently to deliver a
budget that is responsible, focused, and
on-time.
Throughout my tenure, tax relief has remained one of my top priorities.
The 2006-2007 State Budget will provide a tax relief package that will
return money to New York's working class families and help make New York
more economically competitive.
As part of the budget, I am pleased to announce that on April 1 the State
sales tax on the purchase of clothing and shoes under $110 expired. Ending
the State sales tax on clothing is just one of the numerous victories for
overburdened taxpayers in this year's budget and will spur an unprecedented
level of economic growth in communities throughout the State.
Consumers have been burdened by the sales tax for too long and our local
businesses are suffering because of it. By offering sales tax free
shopping, small businesses will be given the necessary tools to compete
with the big businesses across the State.
New York's economy scored a major victory with the elimination of the State
sales tax which will have a positive effect for many years to come. I am
confident that by focusing on smart spending and holding all levels of
State government accountable we will continue to strengthen our financial
stability and build an even stronger State for future generations.
