Boy Scouts & Elks Recognize New Eagle Scouts
|
On Sunday, April 23, Lyons Elks Lodge number 869 hosted the Finger
Lakes Council's 39th annual Eagle Scout recognition dinner. At the
dinner, the council and Elks recognized the 47 Scouts who earned
their Eagle Scout Awards over the past year.
Council advancement chair Gary Friends and Lyons Elks Lodge Exalted
Ruler Mark Wunder presented the 17 Eagles who attended with a flag
and a certificate. Friends explained that ascending to Scouting's
summit takes a great deal of time and hard work. Consequently, many
Scouts are older when they earn their Eagle, and college, military
and jobs conflicted with the dinner, but those Eagles who were unable
to attend will also be recognized with flags and certificates.
In his remarks, Scout Executive Robert Dorm noted that, nationally,
just over one percent of the Scouts earn their Eagle Scout Award. The
Finger Lakes Council averages more than four percent.
Eagle Scout Ed Mack spoke of the many times that his Boy Scout
training has helped him in life, and those times when people
recognized that he was an Eagle Scout. Mack is vice chair for program
in Iroquois District, which serves Wayne County. Patrick O'Connor, a
2002 Eagle Scout from Ontario, charged the new Eagles to serve as
role models as they go forth into the world.
The Geneva-based Finger Lakes Council serves nearly 4,000 Scouts and
1,800 volunteer leaders in Ontario, Wayne, Seneca and Yates counties,
and is a participating agency of the United Ways in those counties.
