Rehab Director John Volpe Tells of Life Before CSHC

John Volpe took the long road on his way to becoming director of Rehab Services at the Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic. John graduated as one of only three males at Russell Sage College, an "all girl's school". Upon graduating, he went to Sydney, Australia to complete his affiliation at the Royal North Shore Hospital, specializing in orthopedics. He then continued his affiliation at the Royal West Ryde Rehabilitation Hospital.
John then went to Austria, then returned to the States and worked two Physical Therapy Jobs. Volpe decided to (way) west, and ended up in the Kingdom of Tonga. He spent a month on the islands of Tonga seeing how the Tonganese live, as well as time on his own exploring some of the less populated islands. He even trekked into the jungle and spent two weeks with only the supplies that he could carry.
John continued his travels, going to New Zealand and to Austria to visit friends. It was at this point that he realized that he had become accustomed to doing without many normal things, and had trouble readjusting to the "modern" world with it''s lights, cars, people, and plentiful food.
Not one to stay in one place too long, John then went on to Singapore and Thailand. He went on to China, where he actually took the "slow boat to China", on the route from Hong Kong to Mainland China. Once there, he found his way slowly through the country, stopping in many small villages, progressing on to the north, ending up in Beijing. He says that he learned just how fortunate we are to live as we do in the U.S. The Chinese have a difficult life. Poverty and the suppression of women were difficult to deal with. He did, however, enjoy walking the Great Wall of China.
Next, John took the Trans-Mongolian Train to Ulaanbaatar, and the Trans-Siberian to Irkutsk, which is called "the Paris of the East". (He did not feel it was as nice as Paris, France.) While there, he was able to see Lake Ozero Baykal, the largest body of fresh water in the entire world. Volpe continued on, crossing Siberia and into Moscow and Leningrad. Proceeding onward, he went to Warsaw and Prague, finally landing in Germany, where he worked for a landscaping company. When the job concluded, John started traveling again, moving on through Europe into Italy, hopping a merchant ship to Greece. He traveled around in the Greek Islands and on to Turkey. Once in Turkey, he made his way to the Eastern borders with Iran and Iraq, ending up in Germany. John made a quick trip home, then returned to Germany and Turkey. From Turkey, he sailed in the Mediterranean Sea along the southern coast of Turkey.
Returning to the States for the last time, John moved to Biloxi, Mississippi, attending a Manual Orthopedic Residence School. He lived and worked in Mississippi and Louisiana, until moving back to upstate, New York to be closer to family. He worked for Via-Health of Wayne Sodus Campus, as well as evenings at the Clifton Springs Hospital and Clinic until full time was available here. John became the director of Rehab Services two years later.
John Volpe has been married for three years, and has three beautiful stepchildren. He bought property in Newark, where he tore down an old farm house and built a new home. John enjoys spending time with his family and friends. His hobbies include gardening, woodworking, and photography. John is still traveling and having adventures whenever he can.
