CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 2, 2006) - Three students from Finger Lakes Community College recently received the State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence at a ceremony in Albany.

Recipients demonstrate academic excellence and contributions to their campuses and communities in areas such as athletics, career achievement, community service, creative and performing arts, and leadership. FLCC awardees include Heather-Lyn Good of Bloomfield, Adam L. Malinowski and Heather Nihart of Canandaigua. They earned this honor after a thorough selection process completed at the College level, as well as through the SUNY Office of University Life in Albany. The Albany office recommended finalists for the award to SUNY Chancellor John Ryan.

Good will graduate this May with an associate in science degree in liberal arts and sciences. Currently, she has a 3.90 GPA. Good's academic achievements include her induction into Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, where she serves as the treasurer and a member of the executive committee. Malinowski is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and was a representative to the All American Scholars Team. Malinowski has
been active in FLCC's Student Senate, serves on the College Council, and participated in the President's Program for Student Leaders. He is a student aide in the FLCC Charles J. FLCC GRANTS EMERITUS STATUS TO BIOLOGY PROFESSOR

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (May 18, 2006) - The Finger Lakes Community College Board of Trustees recently granted emeritus status to Edward M. Morrell, of Victor. Morrell, a professor of biology, has worked at FLCC for 35 years.

Morrell's teaching specialties include: biology for non-majors, human genetics, recombinant DNA methods, electrophoresis, spectrophotometric methods, and human anatomy. Over the years, many colleagues and students have noted his determination to make the science courses he offered intelligible to the widest range of abilities. He is known for his entertaining impressions of John Belushi as the "Samurai Chemist" explaining the concept of the atoms, jumping on tables to explain surface tension, and bouncing off walls to convey molecular movement. His less-traditional teaching methods serve to engage students and illustrate scientific principles in entertaining and unique ways.

Morrell developed the biology of man sequence, an innovative approach to teach non-science majors biology. He was also instrumental in development of the Biotechnology degree program with courses like electrophoresis and spectrophotometric methods. He has recently rewritten the College's lab manuals for biology of man I and II. While at the College, he has been involved in numerous committees. Additionally, Morrell has offered a variety of lectures, special presentations and workshops to audiences such as elementary and high school teachers on the subjects of "Biology of Water" and "Human Birth Defects."

In 1991 Morrell was awarded the State University Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Morrell earned a master's degree in zoology from SUNY Brockport, a bachelor's degree in biology from St. John Fisher.
