Phelps-Clifton Springs School District Voters Pass Budget
|
Voters in the Phelps- Clifton Springs school district passed the proposed budget for the 2006 - 2007 school year. According to district clerk BJ Hicks, voter turnout had been rather slow up to around 5:30, but she hoped it would pick up. Lines outside the school for the Lacrosse program BBQ were long, and it was hoped that all of these people would take the time to go inside to vote. Ms. Hicks stated that there were approximately 6500 eligible voters in the district.
The biggest item of concern was the general fund account, which totaled $31,205,353 for the upcoming school year. Also on the ballot was a proposal to spend $193,500 for two 65 passenger busses and one 22 passenger bus. Another yearly addition to the budget is an amount to be contributed to support the Clifton Springs Public Library, this year's amount being $11,000. Two seats for the school board were uncontested.
The voter breakdown, as provided by the district clerk, is as follows.
Proposition 1 (general fund) 563 yes 287 no
Proposition 2 (busses) 596 yes 254 no
Proposition 3 (library) 491 yes 347 no
Both Dave Knitter and Terrie Meyn retained their board seats
The number of voters who took advantage of the opportunity to make their wishes known, 857, is the lowest number in the last ten years. Last year, the previous low, 1077 voters came out.
Ms. Hicks stated for the record that the monthly meetings of the board are open to the public, and are generally held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. A second meeting, if needed, is usually held on the 4th Wed. In July, at the "reorganization" meeting, a schedule for the 2006-07 school year will be decided.
