Midlakes Sports

by Ginny Konz

If you have a high school athlete in your family you know that practices for fall sports at the jv and varsity level began August 14. By the time you read this the golf and tennis teams will have each played two matches, and the boys' and girls' volleyball teams will also be playing, on August 30 and 31.
Playing jv tennis for Coach Dave Webb are: Erin Pollot, Samantha Hemminger, Ashleigh Lane, Arian Burnett-Farrands, Ashley Flye, Karissa Gage and Genevieve Pelletreau.
Varsity Coach Maggie Hicks has an abundance of experienced girl power and two exchange students. The visitors are Johanna Guerra Valbeuna from Colombia and Hiroko Tanka from Japan. Midlakes "regulars" include Amber Beman, Mary Boerjan, Katy Leitner, Krystal Lathrop, Kayla Beach, April Hawman, Ashley Vehec, Liz Renhardt, Katie Nolan, Sara Green and Liz Beaker.
These teams will be playing on August 29 and 31 this week.
This weekend the soccer teams, football teams and volleyball teams will be active. The soccer teams begin with their Labor Day Weekend Tournaments. The games will begin at 10am on Friday, Sept. 1, with the Midlakes boys' teams playing in the 12 o'clock games and the girls' teams in the 4 o'clock games. Starting times for Saturday's games remain 10, 12, 2 and 4, but winners would play at 12 (boys) and 4 (girls).
The only soccer roster I have at present is from Coach John Wilbur for the jv girls. Coach Wilbur pointed out that his team is heavy with freshmen because Coach Spoto raided his team to fill out the varsity ranks. This team's members include: Gina Phamasith, Ali Hemminger, Catherine Brown, Ali Millerd, Liz Cooley, Sarah Mineo, Jessica Wright, Jolynn Kane, Megan Tillman, Kelsey Knitter, Maria Reyes, Erica Adams, Claire Schneible, Nicole Mattoon, Elise Gage, Liz Maloney, Jenn Stoffel, Emma Fagner, Emmy Clark, Brianna Modzel, and Hannah Smith.
The varsity football team will travel to Mynderse on Friday night. Coach Chris Moyer sent me the following roster: Bryant Lead, Chris Galliher, Albert Hollis, Jake Michaels, Clay Hemminger, Jerrid Pierce, Jimmy Phamisith, Colin Hotchkiss, Elijah Guillaume, Nick Soler, Travis Bevins, Kyle Tillman, Josh Moracco, Bill Hanvey, Tom Goodman, Bryant Rice, Eric Minns, Nick Newland, Mark Triplett, Aaron Congdon, Brock Smith, Jared Schoonerman, Josh Shaffer, Mike Hixson, Matt VanDeMortel, Caleb Jensen, Travis Goodman, Greg VanderBrook, Trent Jones, Tyler Turner, Curtis Maslyn, Will Willoughby, and Nate Holtz,
The jv team begins its season on Saturday morning at 10am against Lyons at home. Coach Maher is at the helm for the 10th year, assisted by Coach Russ Stark, who had a few undefeated seasons at this level before giving up the head job. The roster includes: Kenny Patane, Tyler Brooks-Lambert, Kaleb DeVoll, Garrett Burgess, Dominick Beniamino, Austin Collett, Cory Iddings, Eric Baker, Dillion Hudson, Max Peters, Justin Huntsman, Shayne Wheeler, Glenn Dowdle, Jarin Heers, Josh Wright, Joe Shaffer, Steve Shafer, Eric Van Hooft, Brad Palermo, Billy Corino, Tucker Jensen, Aaron Tornow, Chris Rushing, Colin O'Neal, David Davenport, Brett Triplett, DJ Thompson, Nick Columbo, Zach Bassett, Joe Lord, Adam Rivera, Mike Ianonne, Ben Landschoot, Nate Pierce, Justin Buttaccio, Ryan Gardner, and Dan King.
