FINGER LAKES HEALTH HOSTS SUMMER WORK EXPERIENCE FOR EDUCATORS

Finger Lakes Health, in partnership with the Finger Lakes Workforce Investment Board, hosted 20 teachers and guidance counselors on August 8 as part of the Summer Work Experience Program for Educators. A two-week experience, educators from 12 school districts spent a week on the job at a variety of businesses in the Finger Lakes region and another week visiting firms to gain an understanding of the business environment and the various career ladders in this area. At the end of the program, educators had a better understanding of jobs and business in the Finger Lakes and will be able to bring their experience back to their students in the classroom. At Finger Lakes Health, Seneca Falls high school biology teacher Laurie Asermily, spent 30 hours in the Geneva General Hospital laboratory observing all aspects of the work performed there.
Lara Chatel Turbide, Vice President Community Services, addressed the group, including group instructor John Clow from the State University College at Oneonta and Karen Springmeier, executive director of the Investment Board, about local, state and national trends as well as social, economic, political and technological issues that affect Finger Lakes Health and the health care industry as a whole. She gave an overview of local demographics and how they impact services provided by Finger Lakes Health and other issues including insurance coverage and reimbursements, physician recruitment and the impending shortages of skilled health care labor. Ms. Turbide also spoke about some of the steps the health system is taking to offset the impending shortages including employee educational programs and tuition assistance opportunities.
The health system also provides comprehensive educational programs for students investigating careers in healthcare of completing degree requirements. Jean Harman, community outreach coordinator at Geneva General Hospital gave an overview of these educational programs from elementary to the college level that includes hosting college interns, group tours, shadowing experiences, career camps for middle and high school students, the New Vision Medical Careers Program for high school seniors and the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Educational Partnership Program.
