Phelps Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month For October
The Phelps-Clifton Springs Central School District was formed in 1967 as a result of a merger of the Phelps and Clifton Springs School Districts. The district covers over 90 square miles, and its buses travel more than 600,000 miles annually. The communities served by the school district have a total population of just over 10,000 people, and its enrollment is nearly 1,960 at present.
The district is governed by a Board of Education consisting of seven members elected by the residents of the school district. John Uveges currently serves as the president of the board, and Terrie Meyn serves as the vice-president. The Superintendent of Schools is Mike Ford, who is in his eighth year with the school district.
The district is blessed to have an outstanding faculty. Two current faculty members, Jeff Beall and Pamela Rapoza, have received the prestigious national board certification.
The district is considered a leading district in the region. Just eight years ago, only forty-five percent of its students received a Regents diploma. In 2006, ninety-two percent of the graduates achieved this distinction. More impressively, sixty-two percent of the seniors with an educational disability also received a Regents diploma in 2006. In 1999, the percentage was zero.
In addition to their academic successes, Midlakes students also excel in athletics and the performing arts. The Theatre Experience, advised by Keith E. Childs for more than twenty-five years, is recognized for excellence throughout upstate New York. Its 2006 spring production of Beauty and the Beast nearly swept the Stars of Tomorrow Awards given by the Rochester Broadway Theatre League.
The school district enjoys outstanding state-of-the-art facilities using the most current technologies available in schools today. Visitors to the district regularly remark about its impressive facilities.
The district is proud of its past and dedicated to an exciting future.
