Midlakes Sports

by Ginny Konz

SWEEP! You don't usually take brooms to the other guy's gym, but Coach Salisbury must have been picturing one as things wound down in the Midlakes-Victor volleyball contest last Tuesday, Nov.3. We had beaten Victor in 4 games back in September, and while it took 5 games this time, it was even sweeter because it basically assures us of the league title. Of course it also means Victor will be gunning for us in sectionals, but then, they always are. Coach Salisbury described the game thus,"nerve wracking, exciting, fun, chaotic, loud, a fantastic but sloppy match and overall a great effort. We did not play our best, but we played well…We will have to have all cylinders going next time to win."
Unfortunately we apparently wore ourselves out in Victor. We hosted Fairport in a non-league match on Thursday, Oct. 5. The first game started with the two teams basically trading points until Dan Mowery took over the serve with Fairport leading by 2 and kept it until we had a 3 point lead. Jake Clyde gave us a 6 point lead and we went on to a 25-17 win.
What happened after that is hard to explain away. The games were close, tied at many points, but each time we managed to submarine ourselves with mental and physical mistakes to lose, 26-24, 25-19, and 25-21. Hopefully we got that out of our system and can rebound. This may help the group refocus for the remainder of the season. This team will host the Jason Owens Memorial Tournament on Saturday (October 14).
Our jv team won all three games. We won the first one very easily, but the second game slogged along with a close score and mistakes on both sides, thus trading the serve. Gradually Midlakes cut down their goofs to take a 20-13 lead and went on to a 25-18 win. Ryan Teed served the first 8 points of the 3rd game. Fairport came within 5 twice, but that was as close as they would get. Ryan served again for 5 additional points late in the game and we put a 25-11 win in the book.
The jv girls' tennis season has ended with a 5-1 overall record, 3-0 in league. The match that was supposed to end the season, with Newark, was rained out and not rescheduled. Samantha Hemminger and Arian Burnett-Farrands, who usually play 1st and 2nd singles, teamed for the JV Doubles Tournament in Canandaigua on Oct. 2 and lost, 7-8, in a tie-breaker. Coach Webb explains the small number of matches by pointing out that many schools have cancelled their jv teams for lack of interested players and says we may be in the same situation next year if more girls don't come out. Cheerleading, soccer and swimming seasons all conflict, so potential athletes are pulled in 4 different directions.
The varsity tennis team has been involved in hosting the Finger Lakes West tournament. Two of our singles players, April Hawman and Hiroto Tanaka, sailed through the first round and then hit the wall in the second round, ending their runs. Two doubles teams qualified for sectionals and will carry the Midlakes banner there on Oct. 16: Sara Green/Amber Beman and Krystal Lathrop/Liz Baker. We are scheduled to host #6 Charlotte in the first round of team sectionals on Oct. 10, courtesy of our #3 seed.
Last Monday, Oct. 2, the jv and varsity girls' soccer teams played Mynderse in practically perfect weather. Both jv teams put up a fight, pressuring each other's defenses. Jolynn Kane put one over the crossbar, then Ali Hemminger got hit square in the face at close range by a kicked ball and left the game. After that we seemed a bit lethargic and slow to the ball. Goalie Claire Scheible was knocked down and Mynderse scored to lead, 1-0, at halftime. Early in the second half she ran out to intercept the ball, leaving the goal unguarded. Liz Cooley saved one shot, but Mynderse put the next one in for a 2-0 lead. We finally got a nicely placed shot into the top right corner of the goal (I think it was Sarah Mineo), but Mynderse scored again so the final score was 3-1.
Coach Shymkiw's modified team had played a talented Wayne team on Sept. 29 and lost, 1-0. This time out they used 3 goalies; Annie Stevenson had 11 saves, Heather Amberg 5 and Jen Strub 2.
They took on Penn Yan on Oct. 2. Coach Shymkiw said, "We were inconsistent and didn't play as well as we had the previous two games. We would make a nice play on offense and then not get back on defense or vice versa." Taylor Naeye scored her second goal of the season to help us avoid a shutout; the final was 2-1 after a 0-0 halftime. Jen had 4 saves, Annie 3 and Heather 2 saves in goal. Besides them, Kelsey Clements, Hannah Gage, and Nicole Wright played well.
