EXTENSION OFFERS TRAINING FOR CHILD CARE WORKERS

Canandaigua - The 21st annual Child Caregiver's Workshop Day sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Community Partners was held on September 30 at the Canandaigua Middle School. This year 205 participants attended the conference, along with 20 different company or agency exhibitors. Child Care providers received five training hours for this one-day event. NYS regulations currently require that operators, program directors, employees and assistants of registered family child care homes; licensed group family child care homes; licensed child care centers and registered school age programs complete 30 hours of training during their registration/license period.
The conference is a combined effort among family and consumer science educators with Cornell Cooperative Extensions in Livingston, Monroe, Ontario and Steuben counties in addition to community partners: Region II Infant Toddler; Canandaigua Family YMCA; Creative Environments, Rainbow Junction, Ltd and Leicester Kid Place, Inc.
The keynote session was presented by Gretchen Kinnell, Director of Training at Child Care Solutions in Syracuse. Her presentation "Guiding Children's Behaviors? It's All About Attitude - Yours - Not Theirs!" "When working with children, you are automatically guiding behavior, but even more important is the attitude of the provider. She told the audience that making children know that they are unconditionally welcomed and care is crucial."
The conference is held annually in the fall and provides Cornell Cooperative Extension and community agencies an opportunity to build and maintain relationships with those who serve child and families in child care settings.
To be added to next years mailing list call 585-394-3977, Extension 425 or 409.
"Cornell Cooperative Extension provides equal program and employment opportunities."
