VALUABLE LIFE SKILLS LEARNED BY GIRL SCOUTS
2006 Girl Scout Cookie Sale Starts October 13!

Goal setting. Financial literacy. Confidence. Planning. Teamwork. Communication. If you think these skills sound like something from a business course for entrepreneurs, you're right. Well almost. Life skills are what Girl Scouts learn while raising funds via the Girl Scout Cookie SaleŽ to support their activities year-round. In our area, girls begin taking orders October 13.
The activity of selling cookies is directly related to the Girl Scouts' purpose of helping all girls build courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.
In Girl Scouts, a leader is a girl who discovers a strong sense of her own self, connects with others by cooperating and teaming up for success, and takes action to solve problems in the world around her. When customers buy a box of Girl Scout Cookies, they are encouraging girls to Discover, Connect and Take Action as girls set personal, troop, and community service goals for the cookie program and beyond. Girls also learn to speak to adults, manage money and work with a budget, and team work. Many women have credited the Girl Scout Cookie Sale experience as a steeping stone to entrepreneurial ventures later in life.
Soon after Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts in 1912, Girl Scout leaders and girls sold cookies in order to be self-reliant and to fund their own troop activities. In those early days, girls baked the original shortbread cookies at home and held neighborhood bake sales to raise money for troop activities. By 1934, several Girl Scout councils were using commercial bakers to assist in their endeavors. Today there are two bakers licensed by Girl Scouts of the USA to make Girl Scout Cookies.

ˇ Girl Scouts in the Girl Scouts-Seven Lakes Council jurisdiction will take orders from October 13-27. Girl Scouts will also be visible with cookie booths selling directly to customers. If no one knocks on your door, visit our website to find a cookie booth near you! www.girlscoutssevenlakes.org A complete list of booths will be on the website after October 20.
ˇ As Girl Scouts work on making the world a better place, this year cookies can be purchased for a local community organization or our military personnel. Every box bought for our military personnel can be handled and shipped via the Girl Scouts-Seven Lakes Council office. The council is also matching public donations up to 1000 boxes council-wide.
ˇ There are eight great varieties to choose from. This year all are zero trans fat. Each box is $3.50. All proceeds remain with the local Girl Scouts.
