ASK THE NEIGHBOURHOOD MECHANIC
|
NAFA stands for National Association of Fleet Administrators. In the late summer they hold their regional events. Members are introduced to the latest vehicles in the manufactures line-up. The latest new product including the cars that will be introduced to the public later in the year. Remember, "fleet" represents a lot of car sales. I was lucky enough to speak at the convention this year. The topic was the many challenges that face the after market repair industry, partially due to the severe shortage of qualified people entering the industry. This is not only true in the automotive field it's a fact in all trades. Plumbers, electricians, machinists etc.. If you're looking for a career that is fulfilling and rewarding take a look at the trades sector of the work force.
I have a 1994 Acura Legend. Radiator fluid sprays out of the radiator cap, which works it's way into the heating system. I have been just topping up the radiator fluid every 2-3 days so the engine won't over heat. I took the car to the Acura Dealership and they told me it was the head gasket, air was getting into the cooling system that this was causing all these problems. My mechanic is telling me it's not the head gasket, but; a heater core. I'm confused.
John
What the dealer is describing is know as pressurization of the cooling system. There is a test that can be easily performed that measures the presence of exhaust gasses in the coolant. If these gasses are present then you definitely have a sealing problem. By the way we have never replaced a heater core on an Acura in the 26 years my shop has been operating. Measure twice and cut once...
I have a 1991 Honda Accord EX with an unusual problem. When the car is running (at any speed), the speedometer will stop functioning and go to "0", the engine light will go on "red" and the "S" indicator will also go on. When I stop the car and turn it off, the problem disappears until next time.
John
To accomplish shifting this series of Accord uses a speed sensor mounted on the automatic transmission. The "S" light signifies that the computer has lost it signal from the sensor. This is a common failure is an easy fix. Test for pulse from the senor when the failure light is on. Having confirmed the failure, swap out the sensor. The 91 Honda will rest the computer when the key is cycled. That's why the light is off when you restart the car. The real story is that a 15 year old car is still drivable and usable. Who said they don't build them like they used to.
